Mid Engine el Camino Trans Am Racer
Par429 Posted: Thu, Mar 26 2009 06:15 PM Reply

I was building another Trans Am car when the though occured that a mid-engine el Camino would be kind of different.  So I combined both projects into this one.  I took the drivetrain from an Accurate Minatures McLaren M8B and wedged it into an AMT '68 el Camino.  It was a pretty tight fit, but the separate frame and chassis of the AMT kit made things a little easier.  Overall, I'm pleased with the results.

Very interesting and imaginative! And I have to admit, much better looking than I imagined when I saw the thread title. Nicely done!

Now that is thinking outside the BOX!!! Very cool idea. This is what model car building is all about. Nice work and it looks like it would work. Very Cool.

You should be pleased with the results. That is a really slick conversion. Very interesting concept very well realized. I love the color scheme and the decal job. Every little detail seems just right.

I must agree that is a very intersting concept. I think it turned out very well.

That's awesome! Hot Wheels has an Elky like that, cool to see your version!

This is my fifth time looking at this thread just to look at this model again.

I don't think it would make it as a Trans-Am car, BUT I think it would make a cool "Silver State" open road top speed racer.

You are inspiring me to do something similar. I'm thinking of a '65 Elky done up as a mid-engined early funny car or exhibition wheelstander.

Hey-

Thanks for your comments.  I wouldn't argue that it would make a good Trans Am car, but I had road racing on my mind when I started it.  And after I picked the Chevy engine from the McLaren, it seemed right to make it a road racer.  Even though with the injector stacks, it would look equally good as a drag racer.

Yes, I did have to sand down the vinyl roof along with removing a lot of trim from the el Camino body.  Pretty tedious.

Thanks again,

Phil

Well it looks great. I use to be involved in 1:1 road racing and some trans am stuff. Yes this would not be a Trans Am racer, but I could see it as a road racer just as it is. It would work with the adding of weight bias and other things. But really that is not the point. Who cares, this is just a neat as heck model.

When that kit first came out. I converted it into a 70 and started modifiying the chassis to make it into a road racer or Silver State timed racer of some sort. I was not going to for the mid engine thing but I modified the frame to accept a C4 Corvette suspension. I never finished it. I think it was the de trimming and the vinyl top that put the end to that project. This thread has sparked that idea again, for me. I pulled it out this morning and have been looking at it, again. My model building skills have come a long way from the time I was working on that model. So I think I am going to go for it again. I think that it is the the thing that really caught my eye is that you got the road race look with your decal placment and the wheels and tires. I just think this think is NEAT!

That is some fantastic work. I had a similar idea using the Deora, but couldn't come up with a transaxle. Thanks for the McLaren idea.
