    I am FINALLY building a kit... Ferrari 612 ** COMPLETE! **

I have been in model burnout mode for years.  I did the math, and I think it has been about 6-7 years since I actually finished a model.  I recently lost my job, so I have time on my hands.  I've been reading about everyone's projects here, and thought maybe I should try and build some of my many unbuilt kits.

Soooooo, I remembered the Revell Ferrari 612 kit I tried to start a short while back.  I forgot that I had already painted some black parts.  So tonight I sprayed some silver parts.  I was suprised the paint can was still good!  As usual, I don't look foward to painting the typical 2-tone interior.  I may just go all black inside.  I have to figure out how to strip some of the chrome parts, as they are not chrome on the 1:1 car.  I've never done that before.

So will I continue with the build??  Will I give up in disgust??  Will this thread languish until the internet freezes over???

Nells, common household bleach will strip your chrome or Super Clean/Purple Power (WalMart auto section) will do it also as well as strip most enamel paints.

As far as starting & finishing a kit, if you're not fired up about it, you'll likely not finish it. So check out your Hot Rod, Streetrodder, Car Craft magazine stash until you find something that really trips your trigger and then go back to your model stash/LHS and find something to build like the magazine car.

How long do I keep the parts in bleach?  If I wait too long, will the plastic melt away?  I can't stand how kits have chrome parts for 1:1 non-chrome parts... I see why they do it, but they are not accurate.

To answer your question, bleach should not hurt the plastic. I've never had a problem with it. It may take up to a few hours to strip it. I'd leave it overnight with no worries. As a matter of fact I've left them for over a week. Don't throw out the bleach. You can reuse it for your next chrome stripping. And get some of that Super Clean (Used to be Castrol Super Clean) It strips paint very well and can be reused also. Can't wait to see some photos.

OK, chrome parts just went into the bleach.  4:00PM 1/20/09.  Didn't get any on myself..... Not much to show in a photo yet.

Well what do you know, a fellow Ferrarian!!! haha  And welcome to the unemployed. I myself for about a year. With plenty of time on my hands as well i've knocked out about 5 kits lately. These guys have almost talked me into building a muscle car again. Seeing all their beautiful work does that too you. Anyway good luck on the build and share some pics when you can.

The parts are still in bleach... I am amazed at how the stuff just dissapears!  But one part, the engine surround thingie, is still fighting chemistry.

I thought of something, though.  I have a feeling most of my paints are probably globs of goo by now.  That may be a factor in my delaying work on this kit...

Keep at it, JD. This is a wonderful kit that goes together really nicely and looks great when finished. Except that I've never really seen one where the hood closes properly. I'm currently working on my third one and have almost everything painted and ready for final assembly. So get cracking!!

JD, I recommend getting a few cans of Krylon. Black, flat black, silver, flat red, tan, etc. These cans will go really far when it's time to paint parts, and leave you less reliant on the little bottle paints, and look a lot better.

Re: I am going to try and build a kit... PROGRESS

    Hi all

Well, I sat down for a few hours and made some actual progress on the 612.  Turns out I already replaced my old paints the first time I told myself I'd build something.  Soooo, here is what I have done so far.  Not perfect, but not too shabby, either.  I'm frightened of the silver accents that belong on the top of the valve/intake covers.  I forgot how the paint fumes can be annoying... and I can't really open the window as it's cooooold outside!!

Next time you need to strip chrome parts try Windex w/ammonia-d. Works like a champ. Been using it for years w/o any harm done to parts. Plus you don't have to worry about getting it on your clothes or hands. Hope this helps.

    Steve

forgot to mention. Most parts are free from chrome after 30 minutes or so. No overnigt waiting.

Nice work so far. I usually have a mask on if the paint fums are to strong, or do a little at a time so the fums don't build up so much. Hope to see some more pics.
