Chrome BFM this much of a PITA?
I have read on here that most prefer the regular chrome to the ultra chrome mainly due to the tackiness of the chrome. After finally getting the hang of this stuff I am finding that the regular chrome BFM will split right along the fine raised cracks on the sheet, rendering any bigger piece of the regular chrome useless and has me resorting to the ultra time and time again. Is this "normal" for this to happen or am I doing something wrong in the handling and removing processes here?
I am including a before and after shot to kind of show what I am dealing with here.
Hmm the pics are only allowed so big on this site so I hope you can see the finer detailing of the way it seem to just tear along the lines there.
Origional pictures are 3072X2304 if you need to see it bigger. THX

I think sometimes we just some it that's just crap. I haven't tried it yet, but some folks are using regular foil. Do a search on it if you are interested. You might can find it under (helipilot). Anyway, nice print. Hope your not wanted for anything. lol Kelly

I've 2 sheets like this. I'm starting to practice helipilots method and probably wont use BMF anymore. Sucks when you need a long piece for a side spear or something.

What brand are you using? The only brand that is worth a crap is the original Bare Metal Foil, the others, Testors, Detail Master, etc, aren't worth anything and will do that. If that IS original BMF, I would contact the company for a new sheet. Good luck!

I believe it to be the original BMF, has the 57 Chevy on it. I take it that some have experienced this and others haven't? LOL I'll have to take a gander at the alum foil method and see how that goes.

BMF is very sensitive stuff. You have to store it flat and keep it away from heat. The only time I've had mine get yucky like what you show in you picts is when it was handled and stored poorly. It got bent and some junk got stored on top of it.
Imitations like the Testor's version are even worse. You can try the aluminum foil but problem with that is it is not as thin as BMF. Since BMF is so thin it does a better job of letting the model details nderneath show through.

I bought some orignal BMF from my LHS and it works great. I also picked up some BFMF from tower hobby about a month ago. The tower hobby flake is in 2 small sheets like your and isn't work a **** IMO. Stick with the original and you will have better luck.

RE: Chrome BFM this much of a PITA?
I'm wondering why my old sheets of BMF that I used 20 years ago never cracked, because every sheet I've had in the past 10 years has cracked prematurely. It's a big problem; I have a new sheet from a different vendor w/a few cracks already. The local hobbyshop has several sheets in stock, all having a ton of visible cracks. There is something wrong w/BMF original chrome....I think they've changed something about it so that it dries out and cracks much, much sooner than it did in the past. Kitchen foil will work, but it's thicker and harder to use than BMF. I've tried, and it just isn't as good. But it may be the only choice unless BMF figures out how to make foil that doesn't crack in a nanosecond after you purchase it.

RE: Chrome BFM this much of a PITA?
I agree...there's something wrong with todays BMF BIG TIME!
I've even talked to people at the company, who claim they're working on a solution. Haven't seen it yet!!!

RE: Chrome BFM this much of a PITA?
BMF can be a PITA. I keep it stored in it's original package, with that package in a sheet protector, with that sheet protector in a looseleaf binder, stored vertically. The foil had wrinkles in it when I brought it home from the LHS. Sometimes it sticks, sometimes it does'nt. I once foiled a 1/72 P-47using Microscale Foil Adhesive brushed on household foil and it turned out pretty good. I have heard that the trick to using household foil is to get the cheapest, generic brand, NOT the heavy-duty stuff. The cheap stuff is thinner, will work easier and will show more details. Remember, when you work with aluminum foil, you are working with real aluminum, and you should see how sheet aluminum can stretch and mold to contours when it is processed. That's how they make curved aircraft panels out of a flat sheet of aluminum- it's amazing to watch.

I have never seen a model with BMF in the real, only pictures. It still looks looks like tin foil and kinda wrinkley looking. I bought some and it didn't give me
the resualts I was expecting.I've given up on it for right now

Bare Metal Foil has gotten worse over the years. Some e-mail retailers don't make it any better sometimes. I received two sheets once in the mail that were bent over in an envelope to ship! I use the portion with no wrinkles and throw the rest away.
