Thought that I would share this technique that I just stumbled across today.
It seemed to work pretty well & some of you might find it helpful.
I started by adding a small amount of red to some #1135 Testors brown enamel to warm the color a bit, & then brushed it on.
Next, I dry brushed a bit of Model Master "Wood" over the top for some light highlights.
After the paint was dry, I scribed some fine lines in a "wood like" pattern into the paint with a fine pointed dental pick.
Finally, a thin black acrylic wash was was added to bring out the grain.
I'm thinking that a coat of clear might bring out the color a bit, but overall I think it worked quite well.

Here are a couple more shots after some detailing.
Still needs a little more work, but you get the idea.

Very nice effect, Steve. Looks very authentic. Thanks for the tip.

Here the method I mentioned on my woody. I dont like the wood texture (wish I had read your idea before!), but it shows the 'varnish' with Tamiya transparent yellow.

Interior wood is usually much darker & more in the brown tones than your photo.
Great effect well done and SUPERB detailing on the dash!
