Mettalic paint options- scale flakes?
Posted by lacquer-lover on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 9:35 AM

Hi, what are the best paint options out there for a metallic finish without the over scale flakes? Is it better to do a fine metallic basecoat and then a clear color coat? Sorry I'm new to all this-h been doing military aircraft all my life..

Some nail polishes have a really fine flake/pearl effect.  Something fairly new in the craft acrylic paints is they are beginning to offer metallic paints.  I have a couple of their colors but have not used them yet, although I do have a build in progress that will be using them.  Another option is also in the craft acrylic paints, they offer a pearl which can be mixed with other of their paints and does have a reasonable metallic appearance.  One nice thing about the craft acrylics is they are quite inexpensive when compared to the model-specific brands.

I build models because I can't afford the real thing!

I find the best paints will be Zero or Gravity, they have very fine flakes that are very much up to scale sizes.

Thanks for the info. What types of paints are these? Enamel? What is the average drying time?  Thanks.

they are lacquer base coats that will then need a clear over them.  I like 2k clears for my cars, both Gravity and Zero carry small size bottles that makes it easy to work with.

I have been using ModelCarWorld lacquer paints for about 10 years now and their metallic paints are the best I have found, the flakes are closest to scale of any paints I have tried.  In addition all of their automotive paints flow on very nicely and unless you are looking for show shine they look excellent with minimal polishing.....no clearcoat required.  They can be purchased by sending an email to mcwfinishes@sssnet.com.  Tell him what you are looking for and he will give you prices.
