You may have noticed that ghost flames are a slightly lighter variation of the color underneath.  Flames well done look fantastic.

That is kind of what I had in mind, but was looking for someone else's thoughts to possibly verify the idea.  Thanks for the reply.

There's a couple of ways to do it. Either paint over two contrasting colors (gray and white, black and white or gray ) or add additional coats of the same color. It  depends on how subtle you want them to be.
