Clear Enamel over a Lacquer Base
Posted by tbone on Friday, March 31, 2017 2:10 PM

Just wondering if you can spray clear coats of enamel over a lacquer base tint coat. Not sure if the solvents in the enamel will react with the lacquer and bleed, or worse. Anyone know if this is ok? Thanks.

It can be a crap shoot when mixing different types of paint, but generally speaking enamel over lacquer is usually ok. Be sure the lacquer is well cured.

The other way around, lacquer over enamel, is often trouble.

Lacquer over enamel is very doable. Been doing it for years and making it work. For me it isn't about making the paints compatable, but about the process and how to make that work. I do it because there are enamel colors by certain manufacturers that are quite striking, not available in lacquers.

Thankfully my clear coat is extremly compatible with every spray paint brand I've tried over the years. Unfortunately it's no longer being made. Bought cases of the clear at the end of last year when i found out the paint would no longer be available, so I'm good.

I love Mecum Auctions and Barrett/Jackson auctions and what would I do without Ebay.
