Hey guys been awhile since I've been on here. Anyways I'm going through my stuff because I'm moving here soon. While I came across my spray paints I discovered something bizarre. There is a fomy like mess spread across the bottom of one of the boxes as you can see in the pics. The Testors model master gts blue pearl was the culprit. After checking the other cans I discovered 2 other Testors were starting to do the same thing. I keep the stuff stored in a shoe box in the closet of my hobby room when not in use. Not sure if it's just a Testors only thing or something to do with my storage method.
Anyone know what the cause of this is? I've been modeling for 20 year and never seen this happen before.

Looks like your can seams have gotten weak and started seeping the can pressure over time and the solvents weakened the seam seal

Had the same thing happen with a can of fly spray last night. The cupboard that the can was in smells of fly spray as it leaked all over the shelf.
That's weird, I haven't even had the cans for that long. Maybe a year tops. Though who knows how long they sat on the shelf at the hobby store before I bought them. I've also noticed that the cans that leaked were only the blue metallic paints. Must be something with those.
I've had the same thing happen, and know many others with the same issue. All Testors cans of various automotive lacquer colors.
Hopefully they've figured out the problem by now.

Had similar experiences witih other types of aerosol materials, too. One example that comes to mind was a PPG (Ditzler at the time) clear "chip guard' material that let go in a similar fashion. Age seems to be the primary factor. No rust or other problem was visible on the outside of the spray can. Possibly the steel was not up to spec for the cylinder or bottom stamping, allowing the crimp to slowly fail. Anyway, it happens to various aerosol products which is a good reason not to store them on an open shelf in where they might cause damage to something of value. (Think: oven cleaner with its paint-removing capabilities cutting loose in the garage next to a nice 1:1 paint job.)

I had a can of Rustoleum Semi-flat black do that last summer. I know what caused it. 100+ temps in the garage is not a good thing for pressurized cans.

I've had it happen, too. To about 5 cans. Always Testors lacquers and always just the clear component of the paint. Never had it happen to Tamiya. I guess it finds a microscopic weak point in the seam of the can. I usually decant so I hope that whenever I need the paint again I can cut the bottom off and the paint inside will still be OK.
