Scratch Built V6
Posted by Fallenz on Saturday, February 20, 2016 8:25 AM
Does anyone know how to make a V6 engine block from scratch (particularly the VR38DETT) b/c I want to swap it in my Datsun 240z, but I don't know what to use.

I would just get one of these...... http://www.hlj.com/product/FRYEK001   It's been discontinued. But, there should still be plenty of them around on the 'bay.

I can't buy anything online b/c I dont have a credit card, so the easiest thing to do is build it from scratch

You might want to start with a shortened V-8 block for the basic shape and go from there.  I am in the process of attempting a straight eight, that does not really resemble any of the ones already produced.

I build models because I can't afford the real thing!

You may have a start with a shortened DOHC 'Vette engine. I forget which years had that engine. It was before the LS engine for sure. I'm thinking mid '90s.

The MPC Chevy Beretta kit has a V-6 in it.

Check out the Opel GT model kit.

I just put one together and had the 4 cyl. or the Buick V6 complete with headers and velocity stacks in the kit.

Look into trying to find a Dodge stealth, I believe this would be a good starting point for what you need. Hope this helps,,,,,Trainwreck.

Several of the 80s and 90s MPC kits had V6s as I recall. If you have an AMT 289 Cobra, as mentioned in another thread it is undersized for a V8.

It's the C4 ZR1s with the LT-5 DOHC engine. It would be a better starting point than one of the pushrod engines suggested so far. The Mitsubishi GTO/Dodge Stealth engine might work too.

No I gave up I decided to use the 2jz from the supra and do a Datsun 240z 2jz swap, everyone was giving great ideas and help but it wasn't what I was looking for, I needed it to make a VR38DETT. I wanted to make it from scratch but everyone was telling me to buy this car and you'll get this engine but I didn't want to buy anything. (Not cheap just wanted to build it from scratch to test my skills) Thanks again forneveryones help and ideas
