Mysterious Ticking Noise
Posted by carterturner on Wednesday, September 06, 2017 9:22 AM

Hi,

I'm trying to determine what this knocking noise is and would like some options...

I pulled the valve cover and didn't see anything immediately wrong with the suspected area. I tried to fit a feeler gauge (.006in) under the two nearby lifters, but no success. I tried a few different cam -positions as well.

-Cranked over engine and lifters seemed to follow the cams fine.

-It is running 5W-30 oil as that's all i had on hand and just wanted to verify the engine ran.

-does not change with clutch position.

-as far as i remember the knock is still there when hot.

I need to run a compression test still but am thinking it must be something valve or piston related. I'm not too worried about pulling the head etc, i just didn't want to deal with that if i didn't have to.

Please help.

Thanks!

I did not find the right solution from the Internet.

I suspect the ticking noise may be a time bomb that sombody put in your bike because they dont like you. Dont take any chances. You should dissassemble the entire motor down to the crancshaft, inspect it carefully then pour in about 5 pounds of two stage epoxi resin. wait about 5 min and then reassemble your bike.

That should fix you.   And no more ticking sound.

Dont worry about the thumb print.... paint it rust and call it battle damage
