Heller Honda!!
Posted by Yobangus on Thursday, September 05, 2013 1:58 PM

Hey guys and gals, i have an old Heller kit  that i bought off a "seasoned" fellow modeller about 11 years ago, he'd had it in his collection for a very long time. It's a 1/8th scale Honda 950SS "Bol D'or" (Japauto), kit number- 984. Does anyone know when this kit was released? as i've had no luck at all finding info on the net. TY

Thought i would share the latest info for those that may have been wondering also. After sending a message in French (cracked out the trusty google translator), to Heller themselves, and after a lengthy wait, i was informed that the kit was released in 1974 and that it was not re-released again. The company itself was bought out by the Hobby Products Group of Borden, owners of British model company Humbrol, in 1981. In 1986, rival kit maker Airfix also joined the group. Heller, with the rest of the Group was sold to an Irish investment company, Allen & McGuire, in 1994. In 2005, Heller was the subject of a management buy-out. However, the following year, the company went into administration. (that history part is from Wikipedia). And lastly i found out (through translating my Heller reply), that the term "Bol D'or", means "bowl of gold", (go figure on that one?)

Thier "bowl of gold" seems to have turned out to be a "croc of #hit"Big Smile    that is some interesting info though, confirms my belief that ya never really know who owns what!,  no wonder the tax man has a job getting at em!,    i thought Heller was still going!  i made some of their ship models, their quality was pretty good,

Yeah i thought they were still going too, and might be, cant always believe what's on Wikipedia sometimes. Pretty sure i've seen some Heller race bike kits that looked fairly modern a little while ago on fleabay. I've never actually built a Heller kit before, the Honda bike in question is quite a complex kit, for instance, the cylinder head is not just 2 halves like most kits, the fins are all individual  parts stacked up on two guide pins (about 25-30 parts all up).

They are (or were) good quality kits, like i say i have only actually made some of their ship models and they were well detailed but i do have a couple of Cadillac kits in my stash, they are also well detailed, down to real springs for the suspension, shame if the company is no longer producing kits and like you say Wiki aint the bible, theres a lot of mis-information on there, Heller did a nice selection of 1/400th scale warshipe, some unuseual subjects, many French 2ww, Italian ships,  i've not seen these subjects covered by any other company,, i had all those kits!! many unmade and went and sold the whole lot thinking i'd never make another model kit,Sad

You can look up the history of the subject of the model. Apparently it was copied from an example on the showroom floor of "Japauto" in their Paris Honda dealership in 1973. The dealerships Honda 950 endurance racer that it was based on is still on display at the dealership on the Champs Elysees. They offered street versions for sale with their "big bore kit" of 950cc up from the standard 750cc as well as custom fuel tanks, seats, fairings, handlebars and rear-set footpegs. Endurance racing is hugely popular in France and the "Bol d'Or" is one of the biggest 24 hour races.
