Help identifying and finding a chopper/bobber kit, please
Posted by Daf57 on Friday, August 03, 2012 5:47 AM

Hi all!

I've just fallin in love with this type of bike - I'm not even sure what they are actually ... bobbers or choppers? I'm afraid my bike experience is with motocross and not the street so much. Anyway - I would love to build a model of this type of bike - where to start? I've had a look around and I'm not seeing any kits of the exact style ... I suppose some scratchbuilding may be in order and that's fine. But what should I start with? I'm assuming this is a Harley - but a soft-tail, sportster..??  It kind of resembles my idea of the old military bike with those handlebars. Any suggestions on a kit or kits to use for this project?

Would appreciate a boot in the right direction please. :)

Thanks so much!

Daf

This is a 'bobber' a stripped down 'liberator' HD 45 .This would best be represented from the Italeri 1/9 WW II motorcycle kit. 'Choppers' would be defined as when the frame is cut to alter rake etc. The two are distinctly different. Good luck with the project. Heres my rendition.

Excellent info! Thank you! I have ordered the Italeri kit (wow - a little pricey!) and can't wait to get started. Your version looks fantastic! Wouldn't happen to have done a tutorial or photo walkthrough would ya? ;)

Thanks again!

I built this whole model on the Finescale forum . One year , one model ,one guy and received over 10,000 views .Unfortunately I was attacked and responded in an aggressive manner. The blog was compromised and I chose to delete it rather than have incorrect and misleading input from unworthy individuals. Finescale magazine chose to return my submissions and banned me from the forum for something like 200 years.

Moving on ,another mag has accepted the submissions and will be going ahead with an article .I have also written a book and produced resin and p/e prototypes for future production. My work can now be seen on Swannys site. So you'll hafta wait for the publication and production of the superset. And yes I took over 1500 pix of the model and every part and technique .

Well now that explains why a search over there at FS will bring  up references to the "bobber" thread but not the thread. That's a shame. I will watch for the article - can you reveal which "other mag" this will be in? I'm really interested in this build.  ;)

Thanks!

I had good results with a Tester quickbuilder kit of an Indian sport scout.  I don't have pictures, but it was fairly easy to convert it into a bobber.

Bobbers in my view are the bare bones of the bike no flash glitzy look at my bike sorta thing, more just the bare essentials to make it run and run quick with. Choppers on the other hand are more of a long low stretched forks ape hanger bars flash paint job (although I have seen some rat chops too). but thats just my views please don't ridicule me if I am wrong.

Of all the things I have lost, I miss my mind the most.!!!!
