Underbody Colors??
Posted by CustomBuilderBobby on Saturday, March 6, 2004 8:54 AM
Anyone have any comments or suggestion on what the underbody colors are for 50's and 60's vintage Checy's and Fords?? Searching the net I found little information available. I somehow think that the entire underbody/frame/etc is not all some type of black. THANKS for any help!!
Just because I start building it don't mean I am ever going to finish building it!!

From what I've been able to come up with (for fords anyway) the floorpans were done in a red oxide primer with an overspray of body color around the edges. The frames, rear ends, and suspension pieces (some suspension parts were left unpainted) were done in a semi gloss black.
I work in an assembly plant an can tell you they are done pretty much the same way today, but instead of red oxide primer they now use a grey primer/sealer.

I think GM did theirs in grey primer with overspray. black can be used to simulate rustproofing.
