1964 Fleetside - bone stock
Posted by Faust on Sunday, February 17, 2019 7:04 AM
The Revell 1964 Chevy Fleetside is the first pickup truck kit that I’ve ever built, although I do have many others in the stash. It was similar to a car, which was nice, but it was also a nice break, with some distinct differences  in build order and challenges.
I was originally attracted to this kit because it was something different from what I normally build, and I figured it would give me a chance to paint something in nice, ‘60s colours and with some chrome on it. I’m not that used to chrome, since so much of my stuff is 80’s-era, wherein all trim was blacked out to be “Euro style”.
I have to say I’m very pleased with the result, although it wasn’t as easy to achieve as I might have thought it would be, given how relatively simple the build looked. Still, it’s one of the most eye-catching pieces in my display, and I enjoyed having something with whitewalls and chrome.  Check out the build, with more pictures, at the link below. Let me know what you think!

I would post more pictures here, but there's also a lot of description and stuff at the link, and it takes me a lot of time to post pics here vs. having them already up on my site.

Clicking a link doesn't take too long! :)

Can you post the reference that states truck engines were not Chevy orange?

I can remember looking up the colour of  the engines, and there were lots of discussions on Chevy boards about it, including some pics of original engines that were NOT orange.

Try this:

I found this. Seems there's not much consistancy. Most pics I have seen show orange. A friend of mine who's dad worked on them says he's only seen orange.

No, you're right that there's not much consistency. However, there is definite evidence that a lot of them weren't orange.

There's some concensus that orange was for car engines, the more drab colours for truck engines. I remember reading a story where a guy's dad took his truck in because the motor failed, and they gave him a new motor. The original was drab, the new one orange.

So, I guess, it's "as you prefer". However, just remember: Just because it's NOT orange doesn't mean it's wrong. Also, if it IS orange, there's a good chance that it might not have been that way originally. On a real truck this could indicate a lazy resto, or the restorer "correcting" what they thought was a mistake. On a model, it could be someone deciding "all Chevy blocks are orange" and just going with that, when that's not correct at all.

In fact, some '57 sedans had Chartreuse engines. I think it's the small 8, or maybe the 6? I can't remember, but my brother researched it exhaustively for his '57 210 sedan, and chartreuse it was!

See, that's typical GM... why make it simple, when complicated will do. (And that's coming from a Pontiac guy!)

If the engine is a V-8, it should be orange. My dad bought a '60 Chevy 60 series new and the engine was orange. The six cylinders were the bluish gray up to a certain year. Maybe as late as '64. I painted a '66 back in the day and the six in it was orange.

Excellent work sir.  This is, in my opinion, what bone stock should be.

Everything about it is top drawer.  Bravo. YesYes

Just keep picking away at it...

No. That's not so. Believe me. I looked into it a lot. Not all V8s were orange. Some might have been, but not all were. There are a lot of original trucks out there with non-orange blocks.

Faust is correct. According to the source I cited a lot of diffrent factors determined engine color. But the majority I've seen were orange.
