1978 Dodge Lil Red Express Truck
Posted by mrmike on Sunday, June 03, 2018 9:17 AM

On Friday, I pulled this LRE off the shelf for a cleanup and rebuilt and it is becoming a major project to the point of it is fighting me back.  A typical AMT/Ertl product, this kit has been compromised by the various re-issues over the years.  There are no positive mountings and everything I touch on this model falls off.

The grille will have to be remounted.

I need new air tubes for the engine and I found these in the parts box.  I might try to modify these to fit the LRE.

More to come...

So far the morning, I have remounted the side steps and added the stacks.  The sideview mirrors have been reworked.  I made a mounting plates and mounted the mirrors sideways to better replicate a stock mirror.

I removed the battery so I can try to fit new air tubes from the core support up to the air cleaner.

I reattached the tailgate and repainted the taillights including adding blue dots to the taillight centers.

More to come...

Looking good, Mike. I built one of these back in the day, and have another half built from many years ago that needs to be finished someday. The grill on these MPC Dodge trucks does not have a good positive mounting, making them very difficult to do cleanly. Yours is coming along nicely.

Thanks Trevor!  I need to fit the air tubes from my parts box or make some from some tubing.  I might have to search out some thick tubing or wire and go from there.  I seem to have gone through this back when I originally built this model and now I'm doing it again!  Isn't it funny how these things come back to bite us...

I also built one of these back in the day, to go along with the real one I had in the driveway. Needless to say, my model never looked as good as the real one! LOL And, sadly, I don't have either one of them, nowadays.Sad

What you have here is looking nice! I'll be peering in to see the finish!

Kit instructions? What's that??

Thank you Bucky!  There was a Dodge dealer downtown back in the day and I would stop in and look at the LREs he had parked on the side near the road on Sunday when he was closed.  I was amazed that, for the small dealer he was, he had three of them.  All prepped and ready for delivery!

Bought mine in Nashville. The salesman went to the same high school as me. I actually got to drive mine out of the showroom!

Every car and truck buyers dream is to drive their vehicle straight off the showroom floor!

I spent a few minutes on the LRE this morning.  The mirrors have been remounted.

The mirror on the passenger side gave me the most trouble.  I ended up drilling a hole through the base plate and into the door for the mirror.  Now it's not going anywhere!

Still need to do some work on the engine compartment.

More to come...
