1979 Ford f-350 Crew Cab Wrecker
Posted by junkman01 on Sunday, March 27, 2016 10:41 AM

This an old cab I've had for a long time. I bought it on ebay years ago, someone tried to make a crew cab & it was a mess. It's been sitting on my table & yelling at me to finish it. I had to remove the rear of the cab that they added & replace it with a new one. I wasn't sure if it was going to be a tow truck or ramp truck but I decided on the wrecker even though it's more work.

I had to stretch the frame & make it long enough for the body I was going to build.

Here it is compared to a stock version.

I stared on the wrecker body.

Now the boom...

Although it is nice ; There's a problem .You are doing nice work though .Nowadays the wrecker would be a hydraulic unit with extendable boom ( A Century ) and wheel lift or a " Flatback" with tilt bed .

Your unit appears to resemble an old HOLMES unit from the fifties .Slow and easy to jam ,most owners breathed a sigh of relief when they were supplanted by better equipment .

Still , don't stop , I believe it will be a project that generates a lot of pride in a job done well . I can't wait to see the finished product . OldCarGuy

Thanks, I was thinking about the newer boom but I wanted it to fit the year of the truck. Plus this is what's familiar to me, I grew up with this kind of wrecker. My father had a small junkyard when I was a kid back in the 70s & he always had this unit, of course his trucks were from the 50s & 60s.
