GMC 9500
Posted by guidematic on Friday, January 03, 2014 3:24 PM
I've always loved GMC's 9500 series trucks. I fopund out that I could get a resin from American Industrial Truck Models. So I ordered one along with a set of their 2-hole bud wheels. I have a partially built GMC Astro kit that I'm going to use as a donor kit. Therein lies another pickle. I used the engine from this kit as part of my resin 12V71 project. So I need an engine. So, I'm going to cast the 8V71 in my unbuilt Chevy Titan 90. Than I have a mold that I can make many more of them. I thought of making another 12V71 for this kit, but these trucks were never available with that engine, the biggest was the 318 HP 8V71N, or in later years the 320 HP 6V92TA. Even an 8V92TA would have been great, but near as I can tell that engine was not available either. I haven't exactly settled on jut how I'm going to build it yet either. I'd live to do a tow truck using the Holmes 750 wrecker body, but looking for the Peterbilt Wrecker, I see they are a bit pricey. If I can find one on the cheap, it would be great. Otherwise I'll do it as a tractor. I did a quick mock-up of the cab on the partially built chassis. Mike

That's going to be a cool build.  I remember seeing two of those running around my home town when I was a kid.  A black one with "Black Widow" painted on the front of the hood and an orange one with "Orange Blossom Special".  Both were tractors and pulled dump trailers and were all chromed out.  Pride in ownership.

Hey Mike, how about running a V6 or V12 gasser in it?

Man, that would make it a REAL project! Dunno how I'm up to scratching one of those V-6's. BTW, the last year for the 702 was 1965, a year before this truck went into production. It was replaced by the 637 V-8.

Just baby steps here, and no pics yet. But going over the General and Titan kits, I've decided what to do with the engine. I'm going to cast the 8V92 from the general, but use and cast a couple of the pieces from the 8V71 from the Titan. The 8V71 has nicer rocker covers with "Detroit Deisel" embossed on them and better exhaust manifolds.

Since the 8V92 was released in 1974, then it's conceivable it could have been used in one of these trucks.

I ordered more casting silicone, so when it arrives I can get busy.
