ESCI Renault R5
Posted by chromecop on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 6:55 AM

Had this in my stash and thought I'd do something different. It'll be a street-legal "lowrider-inspired" Renault. Just lowered in the old-fashioned way, no hydraulics.

Lots of detail were omitted by ESCi when they designed this kit, so I've done my share of scratchbuilding. I started with redoing the dash into an early model configuration. Then I had to scratchbuild levers for the seering column , redo the steering pod beneath the instrument cluster, switch position of the gear-shifter from the floor to the dash etc etc

After lowering the car and narrowing the front suspension I had to do some mods to the engine to make it fit,I replaced the carbs with 2 chromed webers and also repositioned the shifter linkage to early configuration:

The gas-cap in the kit was a big "rallye-type" cap. I omitted that one and scratchbuilt my own "stock-looking" cap instead!

This is coming along very well indeed! I saw these on the rally stages in the day as a marshall and later helped a friend with an R5 racing car on the circuits. Keep up the good work, never seen a road going version like this before!

Thanks for your comments guys, highly appreciated!

Dashboard got it's first coat of black paint today (still wet)

I've kinda developed my own "trademark" over the years and most of my builds get a sunroof. In this case - a closed one. Pretty simple to create:

Seats will be sand-coloured cloth. The rear window louvres got some black wrinkle-finish paint and the "sliding top" as well. The sliding roof will later on be gold coloured vinyl while the louvers will get a semigloss black finish.

Wasn't that thing marketed in the U.S. way back as the Renault - Le Car ?

The Renault 5 was quite a success and sold for many years. One of the various optional packages that was available during a period was "Le Car", which was sold in Europe as well.

ESCI omitted some rather important detail when they produced this kit, so some more scratchbuilding went into the engine. Distributor and coil:

Done with the speakers. They measure about 8 mm in height (that's about 1/3 inch) and about 5 mm i diameter (that's about 1/5 inch) and each speaker contains totally 6 small pieces of styrene.
