Vintage "Mean Maverick" Funny Car
Posted by Classic Plastic on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 12:49 PM

I took a DRAG down memory lane this past weekend and visited my roots back in Iowa. I found some GROOVY models that I built in the 70's. This one held up very well in storage. Some of you older modelers might remember the Mattel/Monogram Ford "Mean Maverick" Funny Car. Hope you enjoy the BLAST from the PAST!

I love these rides on the Nostalgiamobile! You really did a nice job with the chassis detailing on this!

I built one of these about 35 years ago.  There was a small motor in the kit that would raise and lower the body; the switch was a large gas pedal- either one of those Moon barefoot things, or a racecar pedal- mounted on a battery box.  I wish I could remember what I ever did with it...

I remember building that one too, and I remember the gas pedal to raise the body. The only thing I don't remember is whatever happened to that model!

The car came out in 1970 that makes it almost 38 years old!! You guys are both right! The kit did come with a battery/control box that ran the electric motor. And, yes it was a Barefoot Moon Pedal! I built the Maverick when I was 14. The 1/12th scale detail was easy..back when I was young.. The chassis detail was the big attraction. I didn't spend alot of time on the body because of that ....I wasn't into making it look like the box art either. Besides, I think I messed up the decals..LOL!

Guys, it's 48 years old now. I bought one with my birthday money in November, 1971, and built it. I still have it, after all those years! I put it on a top shelf in my room, and left it there. That's the only reason my Mean Maverick survived to this day! Every time I look at that model, it takes me back to that time in my life when I first built it - that first year in junior high school. Good times; good times....
