CLK GTR
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 11, 2003 8:38 AM
Does anyone know where to get reference photos for the (1997) Warsteiner / D2 Mercedes CLK GTR? I have searched the internet high and low. I have only found about 12 pics (not very good ones at that).
Any help would be great.
THANKS

I had the same problem so I ended up building my 100% box stock. I altered the paint a little to use more realistic metallic finishes but otherwise box stock........

I don't know where you have been looking. I can tell you, as you already know, that photos of these cars are few and far between. If you haven't already try a Google search with criteria "mercedes" and "motorsports" . Try it just the way I typed it and then try variations on it. I've managed to get some photos of the street version, but nothing of detail.

Eric, I really appreciate your postings on the forum. Thanks for all the encouragement you have given me and the help that you are so ready to lend to anyone who comes along. I hope you save some time out for modeling and family. Wink

Thanks, Brian. I'm just another model builder and love the hobby. I just like building, showing my work, seeing others work and helping / talking about models.
As for family, I have a son in college and a wife that loves cars and racing almost as much as me....... so it works out great.

I have the Mercedes Benz CLK DTM 2000 Team D2 (Tamiya 24234) still in the box. Looking to paint it German Silver Metallic just to be a little different.

Also have Mitusibishi Lancer Evo VII (Tamiya 24257) and Ford Focus WRC (Tamiya 24217) waiting on the shelf. I picked up the Pro Markt-Zakspeed AMG Mercedes Benz (Tamiya 24210) at a model show for a cool ten bucks! Might give that one to a nephew for Christmas.

Also ordered the Nissan 350 Z (Tamiya 24254) and the Opel Astra Team Phoenix V8 Coupe.

Looking forward over the next six months in building them all. I'll certainly help you look for some reference photos. Might find some luck in searching for a German search engine (language barrier) first. Then search on that search engine for pics.

Dear chnp, the Clk-Gtr is one my projects on my bench right now. I know what you mean about the ref material. I had to buy a stack of old Racer magazines to get some interior and engine pics. From what I can tell, almost everything labeled x-18 semi-gloss black in the directions are black on pewter carbon fiber. The cf in the cockpit is also shiny like it has clearcoat on it. Sakatsu makes a detail set for it also. It contains pe for wingends, tow hooks, etc. And a piece to use instead of the Tamiya supplied mesh with "warsteiner" stencil no less, and 4 turned metal valve stems. Cool stuff. Hapico (www.hapico.com) carries that along with some other stuff that is good for the car like a Modelers brand seatbelt set (very cool) and Modelers brand hose ends (a/n type fittings) that are already painted (also very cool). I've done biz with them quite a few times and they are very friendly and efficient. Scaleracecars.com probably has some stuff also, they carry Sakatsu too. I almost forgot, Hapico also carries a detail set by a company called Yoruzka? I think. It is white metal replacements for some of the kit parts. Good luck. If you find anything cool out, please send it my way.

Hey, thanks for the help.
I've used the few (very few) pics of the race car that I could find along with pics of the street car, and cars of other modelers to build mine. It's probably not very accurate, but it looks o.k. so far.
I had given up on finding detail kits and stuff for the car, because nobody around me carries it, so I've made a few things myself.
Oh well
Thanks,
Chris
