Ramchargers funny car, finished
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 13, 2007 8:47 PM
This was an old Johan Gene Snow car I built a long time ago.
Just redid it.
Kind of a hurry up job, looks OK though.

1st funny car in the 6 sec. zone in 1971. Driver: the late Leroy Goldstein.

Excellent rebuild!!!Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Was this an original Johan or AMT kit?

It looks very similar to the photos of the upcoming reissue from Model Roundup, which many of us can hardly wait for!

On the bench:  '63 Studebaker Avanti.

Thanks......This was an original Jo-Han kit. Gene Snow's Rambunctious Dodge Challenger. I have the original MPC Ramchargers Challenger, but it is a stock body, not even close to a funny car body.

I used Fred Cady 2 pc RCs decals and they worked great. Added some Slixx also.

Brings back memories! I was at Detroit dragway when the Ramchargers made there first 6 second pass.........it wasnt official or anything as it was at the weekly wed night match races, but none the less it was there first 6 second run! If I remember right it was against Dick Harrell's Camaro

I built that Challenger kit when I was a kid (and wrecked it by doing so ), so it's nice to see someone do it properly. Great work ! DR JAY

great job on the Ramcharger F/C !!!! Hey Gonzo64nova ... do you remeber the MARINO"S ITALIAN ICES 70 Challenger Alchol funny car the was run there in the early 70's? That was us., I was one the crew. We blew up alot of blowers at National Speedway .Tried to let us run at Hamptons with it but they frowned on anything over 10 seconds. Paul

Hey everyone,

Thanks a lot for the nice comments on this one !!

I really love the cars from this time period. I was fortunate enough to work on a couple of the more popular (real) funny cars "back in the day".........It's still my passion.

I try to research and do a build as accurately as possible. This one was somewhat of a challenge with the decals. I don't think any 2 pictures of this car are the same.
As I remember, the Ramchargers went through a few total cars and several bodies.
The cost of speed.............These guys were fast !!

Well, Draggin'70s.............I'll see you at Memphis tomorrow for the NHRA circus and we'll smell some NITRO !!

Thanks again all,
Jim Cool

Very nice replica of an historic race car! I have a 'Eugene White' Challenger that I'll be making the same car with. You're correct....virtually every picture I've ever seen of this car is different in some way or another. Oh well, you just go with a version that's do-able and run with it. Once again, excellent re-build!

Just some history on Leroy Goldstein..........
After he drove for the Ramchargers in the early '70's in this Dodge Challenger,
he drove a couple different cars. Drove for and was successful for
Candies & Hughes also Whipple/Mr. Ed's Satelite and then he was the "tuner"
for Kenny Bernstein's 1st high buck car about 1979-1980.
Goldstein was a great driver and mechanic as well.

Real nice job on your F/C! Here is mine. I used the Rockville Centre Dodge decals on mine. That is how it appeared at NY National when it ran the first official 6 second run.

Love the funny car man! Believe it or not my dad's 1:1 Hemi was blueprinted by ramchargers....they said that with the right gears and headers it would have been one of the fastest and most competitive B-stock cars in the country....he got it blueprinted in 69 I think, still have the roadrunner....and he is the only owner of course....but its so cool to be able to say that so I had to...if some people dont belive be on this let me take a pic for you...we have the engine stamp to prove it :P
