Testors 1/24 Ferrari Dino 246 GT
Posted by miarob on Friday, December 5, 2003 7:00 AM
Just got the Dino kit from ebay. I built this kit back in 1986 and haven't seen any in a long time. That was the only car I ever put in a show, well actually I entered it in the county fair here. Got a blue ribbon in my class. This kit is highly detailed with over 200 pieces. It would be nice to see testors rerelease some of those kits from the 80's. Has anyone else built this car in the past? If so, what was your experience? This will be my next project after I get done with CBP. Can't wait to get this one on the bench.

Actually it's a Fujimi kit that Testors reboxed. Most of Testors models, especially the sports cars, were all produced by other model companies and reboxed by Testors. I like them because most of them had good color photos of the models on the underside of the box. The Dino a nice kit, and Fujimi did a simpler curbside version of it as well, which is about to be reissued. Online sources like Hobbylink Japan (www.hlj.com) have preordering information.

Thanks for the info Zoom, I didn't know that. There was another kit in a testors box about the same time, a Porsche Targa I believe. It was also highly detailed. I haven't been able to locate one of those though.

We are talking about the Fujimi "Enthusiast" series. One of the best series ever by any manufacturer. They did many variants of the Porsche 356 and 911, 3 Ferrari Daytona, and 3 Dino versions, and a couple of BMW 635s I think.

These kits, with a little cleanup work, build into AMAZING models out of the box, but you can add some wiring and photoetch and you have a contest winning model.

Most of the 356s are availabe on HLJ, as are some of the 911s, and both BMWs.

The Dinos and Daytonas can be found on Ebay for around $25-$50 US

I've built the 356B/C 356 Carrera Roadster and am currently working on the 911 2.7 Carrera Lightweight.

Thanks for the info. These were the best kits I ever built. I can't wait to get my hands on the Dino kit. It will be fun to build it after having done it nearly 20 years ago. Hopefully I will get it in the mail tomorrow, be a cool b-day present. It will be the next project on my bench. Have to finish the CBP that I'm working on now first though.

Well, I got my kit today. As someone mentioned, the kit was made by Fujimi and boxed by Testors. The Testors kit # is 395 and it was sold in the mid 80's, not sure when they stopped selling it. I don't know what thew Fujimi # was if they produced it in their own box. This kit has about 300 parts out of the box. Very nice kit!! This will be a fun one, it was when I built it in the 80s.

Intersting..I also just got my Testors Dino kit in the mail LOL

I am still deciding color, but if history is any indication, it'll be red...I have a Fujimi hardtop and a Testors Spyder. I plan on using the hardtop body, as they are both Fujimi and exactly the same kits.

I've actually done this kit twice over the years. Its a spectacular kit. The only thing I remember being a real pain was the headers...

avj97, I did this same kit about 15 years ago. I did it yellow the first time, not sure what color this time. Syill gonna be a while before I start it. Yeah, I do remember those headers. I know this is an awesome kit to build and will enjoy every minute of it again, someday.Smile Let me know how your build goes when you start it.

The headers are a REAL pain. And the pictorial directions are a bit vague to me on the sequence of assembly and subassembly. Take your time. I am about half way through my Fujimi version.
