Old Stock Car Pics?
Posted by Diehard on Tuesday, December 02, 2003 12:40 PM

Does anyone know of, know how to find, know a website, or whatever, that has pictures of short track stock cars from the early '60s? I'm looking for something like a mid '50s sportsman class vehicle.

These weren't actually stock vehicles but they were called stockcars, junkers, class A, or similar depending on the track they ran on, usually a 1/4 to 1/2 mile dirt or paved oval.

Heavy duty steel "nerf" bars, cut out wheel wells, like that.

Am looking for reference material before building what I THINK I remember.

Thanks in advance.

Try here. I think it is close. In any event, it may also give you a few other ideas. Check the racing career page 1 and 2. Also has old nascar pictures.

I'll apologize in advance of any pop-ups courtesy of Tripod. Not my page, this is an old friend of the families page.

Thanks, Monty.
Very close. I'm hoping to find some from just a few years earlier where the car(s) are about mid-fifties and hopefully from a little earlier in the racing season (less "dings").The class titles of late model sportsman and/or modified are ones I forgot about but that's what I'm a-huntin'.
I love that guys early NASCAR - I just couldn't get the "big" versions of the pics to show (so I could steal 'em!)
Thanks again.

Diehard, you're not talking about stealing my pics are you?? That's illegal, not to mention impossible because I'll send any of'em you like right to your e-mail box. LOL Try my brother's gallery for his dirt car models. There are a few of the older cars all the way to the latest local cars including some from the "fiberglas paper airplane" era of the dawn of "air management" racing.

He also just brought me a photo CD of pictures he copied from a private source that had a lot of the older cars. It even had a picture of one of the cars driven by the man who won the first race I ever saw. It is a flathead Ford late '40's coupe. Have I been at this a while or not? LOL

Man, Mitchum! You have just made my day. I was hoping to find pics of the real cars but your brother's gallery is as close as I've seen for those "old days." I even saw some of his models of cars/drivers I saw race. You two gotta quit on the fantastic photo work - I ran thru 5-6 cars before I realized they were scale, not real. Great work.
Those tri-5 Chevies were what I was hunting the most. Nothing else could thunder on the short tracks like them. I remember that feeling all too well!
Any chance that CD has a shot of driver by the name of T.C. Hunt out of GA? His number was 89 I'm pretty sure (my memory's getting weaker with age)

Diehard,

The only thing I could come up with is one of his Grand National rides.
How about a '61 Plymouth?

diehard, check out this site..especially the links...

plenty of old stuff there. and for what its worth, that #41 late model was driven by buck simmons from ga. the first race my dad took me to was a dirt track in athens ga. and the winner that night was buck simmons. last year i took my 4 year old son to his first dirt track race...yep,buck simmons was the winner.

I went to a "gentleman's club" because the sign said they had all the hottest models. I thought it was a hobby shop. Man, was I ever disappointed.

Great site. Love that old stuff. I have some pictures circa 1970's from the old Raceway Park in Blue Island, Illinois (now gone) that I might be able to scan and post if I can ever find the time.
