About to start building a 69 Torino, and need to know what year NASCAR stopped using treaded tires.. And was Goodyear the only tires used..
Thanks

Pictures I have show treaded tires on a 1972 NASCAR so a 69 would 'fer sure have 'em. BTW, Mark Donahue was the guy who spearheaded "slicks". He ran the AMC Javalin in Trans-Am in 1971 with slicks and proved to Goodyear they were faster than any tread pattern..

i believe it was '70, because the Superdirds were to fast for the "old" tyres. Goodyear then devolped the slick....

I think Weasel is right. I once heard that the Superbird was getting so much down force that the old style tires couldn't take the abuse. So a stronger "slick" was developed.

Just checked my Petty book, and your correct. 1970 saw the first use of slick tires as well as restrictor plates under carbs. Window netting would be mandatory after Petty was nearly thrown out of his car after an accident at Darlington. Hope that helps when doing build-ups.
You can never have enough kits nor enough time to build them.

Does anyone have good info on wheel widths through the 60's? Were Goodyears the tire of choise in NASCAR or were Firestones sometimes used?
