Help: GT40 model kit
Posted by dawgvet on Saturday, April 18, 2020 7:44 AM

I am looking for advice and was hoping some of you guys could help. My teenage son is really into the original Ford GT40’s and I was hoping we could build a model of one together, especially since he’s stuck at home during this quarantine.  I’m having a hard time finding a Fujimi kit for less than $100 on the big auction site.  Is this my best option? Anyone know of how else to come by one? Are decal sheets available for this kit? He would probably want to build the Ken Miles car if possible. He’s never built a model car but I’ve done some fairly extensive modeling, just been a while.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Jed:

The various incarnations of the Fujimi kit are pretty much it.  Revell's '66 winner is a Fujimi kit. Revell had a nice re-issue of the old Aurora kit of the late 1964 - early 1965 Mk. I, which sorely needs replacement tires and if you are building one of the Shelby 1965 cars, Halibrand mag wheels.  There is also a mid-1960's IMC kit which I think Union also released, in 3 variations; the original 1964 car, the 1966 LeMans winner, and a Gulf version.  These are somewhat under-sized and extremely fussy to build as the doors, and front and rear body panels open up and the suspension and steering "work".  Unless you are of that vintage yourself and want to dive into nostalgia, stay away.

Lots of decals out there.  Search that "big auction site" for Fred Cady decals. He has, had, decals for everything from the '64 LeMans cars, the Shelbys, the '66-'67 Mk IIs, to the Gulf Cars. Be aware, however, that Fred's decals come in layers.  Which is not a problem for '64 LeMans and '65 Shelbys and most of the Mk. IIs; you just have to apply the numbers on the roundels and you are done.  I don't use his sponsor decals because that gets you into the layering; as in, for an example, separate decals for each of the red, white, and black parts of the Champion Sparkplug decals.   That said, Fred makes, or made, decals for a lot of subjects that nobody else has ever made.  If you use his decals, have reference material available as Cady really does not have anything available, except for his ancient picture pages with postage stamp size photostatic copies of pictures.  Fred retired some years ago, but I think he still runs a few off now and then, or somebody else is doing them for him, as they keep showing up. Right now, these are to be found you know where:

Indycals has superb decals for the '66 cars:  http://www.indycals.net/decals/lemans.html

Starfighter makes really nice decals for the '67 cars:  https://www.starfighter-decals.com/automotive-decals.html

Good luck with this,

Tom
