WRC Cars
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 9, 2004 6:15 PM
I am starting to build the Ford Focus Petter Solberg (World Champion 2003) drove in 1999, using decals from Studio 27 and the Tamiya kit.

Is there anyone who knows a good link for Rally Car pictures, especially interior shots?

My decals are for the RAC race, the tyres in the kit is for tarmac. Anyone who knows a good source for mud tyres?

Cool

What about the tires from the "safari" versions of the Subaru Impreza from Tamiya? They have much bigger sidewalls than the tarmac versions. Take a look at that kit (just an idea).

Andy's suggestion is a good one re: tires, but remember that because the car you want to build is a mudder, you will also need to modify the suspension and increase the shock height to raise the clearance of the car (vs. the "lowered" look of the tarmac car). Taller tires will help a little, but won't really give you the look of a mudder.

Unfortunately Tamiya does not manufacture a dirt version of the Focus, although they DO have the Peugeot and the Imprezza. You can probably kit bash from either of these two kits, but there will be some modification necessary to make those parts work.

Another option is to take a look at Hasegawa's Focus WRC ’99 Safari Rally Winner (kit number HSGCR27).

Part of the CR Series, Hasegawa's Focus is a very detailed kit targeted at hard-core rally car modelers. Compared to the Tamiya kit, this version has more parts and in some areas, more detail (comes with photo-etched grilles, emblems, seatbelt buckles, etc., as well as strips for the belts themselves!), though individual parts are often less-detailed than their Tamiya counterparts. The car's decals and appearance have more "umph", too, since it is a safari version of the car. They also provide the large, orange markings as complete decals, where the Tamiya kit requires masking and painting.

Keep us posted and send some pictures of your progress!

Tamiya have several kits with gravel/mud tires( escort cosworth, lancer evo6,impreza and peugeot 206). Hasegawa have a acropolis version of the Focus and it is spot on for
the version you are building as the set up is quite similar for the 2 rallies.
Snowtires can be bought from a company in the UK called MRM INTERNATIONAL

Regarding MRM, there was a long discussion about them in a Yahoo rally model group. The guy lives in the UK, and is apparently great to deal with at the model shows but is tough to get a hold of on the internet. I'm interested in a couple sets of snow tires as well, and the F2 conversion for the Renault Megane, but if people want to make it hard to do business with them, what can you do?
