Harry Miller engines; any produced in scale?
Posted by Wick Humble on Saturday, October 6, 2018 10:16 AM

I've been fascinated by the engines of American genius Harry Miller since I bought Griff Borgeson's "Golden Age of the American Racing Car" back in the late 'sixties.

Harry's (or Leo Goosen's) engines; besides Offenhauser fours, have any produced in scale?  I'm rescuing an old glue-bomb Cad phaeton, and am scratching-up an interpretation -- apochrypal, of course -- of a Miller V-16.  It is based on two parts-box Ford flathead blocks in tandem, with the rest made from scrap and tubing.  Miller made a few very large boat racing engines, and one or two big-inch car plants too, but this thing is turning out monstrous!  Oh well, it's a fantasy anyhow... !

On a related subject, was there ever a scale NOVI V-8 made in plastic or resin?  I'm converting an o-l-d Mercedes GP engine to look like a NOVI -- to put in a highly modified '53 Studebaker (imagine Granitelli's short hook-up with Studebaker and NOVI at Indy...) and between the two motors, I have my hands full with just making the exhaust headers!!  I'm using the centrifugal blower from the M-B as a pattern for the Miller superchargers (2) on the V-16.  It doesn't have the radial fins ofthe prototype, but maybe I can figure that out too.  Note: I can recall hearing the Indy 500 on the radio (what's that?) the last year the NOVI ran; it's sound was truly insane, with the blower at high revs; not like a turbo at all.  Oh well...

Thanks for everything; wish me luck and good health to finish!

PS/ Watch for the revised edition of my book "How to Restore Your Datsun Z-Car" coming out soon; 27 years in print! :-<)

To my knowledge no one has ever done a NOVI in scale. A couple have done Miller 91 straight eights, Etzel Speed Classics produced a Miller Indy car with  a pretty nice engine. Historic Racing Miniatures produced a front drive Miller also with an engine.  Etzel also made a full detail Offy 270 which was later reproduced by Replicas and Miniatures of MD.  Also the Indianapolis Motor Speedwy radio network still broadcasts the 500 each year.

Thank you for the info; at least I won't go looking for a NOVI. I have what's left of an old Monogram Kurtis Indy roadster (PC12) that had a pretty nice M-D Offy four, and apparently they also did a midget with Offy (PC1) as late as the early sixties; ever seen one? I suppose a good resin caster could make a V-8 version and convert it to NOVI look; maybe that's what the companies you mention did? My budget doesn't allow to much liberty among the resin products, but... Where did all those great old model patterns go? I still have bits of their 'slingshot dragster' (49), and some of the roadster kits. Wick (b.1945)
