Chapparal 2E

Hello everyone. I was wondering if there is any hope of a retooling/rerelease, new release of this iconic race car. I have searched the web over and the only thing available seem to be vintage kits, some diecast and a kit out of Japan. I remember having this kit as a kid (60s) and it being way to complicated for my age and the technology of the time.

It is such a facinating auto that I was suprised at the limited availablility. With that said, how does one start a campaign to get this true piece of automotive history recreated in 1/24 scale or possibly 1/20th. I appreciate any advice or comments.

It is amazing the truley incredible cars that have never been kitted in scale, and most never will be. However, the Chaparral 2E has been kitted and released by several companies. IMC did a kit of the 2E, and the 2E is also available from Union out of Japan. Union has released many kits from IMC tools, so this one is likely the same kit. There may be other Japanese makers who have released a kit from this tool as well.

However, Bandia has also done a kit of the 2E, but it is a motorised kit, so one would expect that it is simplified and potentially inaccurate. I would steer clear of it. Palmer also released a kit of the 2E in 1/32 scale, and in case you are unaware of Palmer kits, stay away from this one also.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the cottage industry high-end kit makers do a version of this car, but can't think of one right off. Also, it seems like a subject the slot car world would have churned out at some time in the past.

Unfortunately the overlap of hardcore sportscar/racecar enthusiasts who know of the 2E, and the model car builders who want to build a kit of one is relatively small and not likely sufficient for a kit maker to tool up for. However I would think a decent 2E could be built from an IMC or Union kit, kit bashing a better engine and using some of Harold Bradford's Chaparral tires & wheels. A vigilant monitoring of ebay and other online model sales sites should eventually turn up something.
