New Tamiya RB6 Red Bull Renault kit
Posted by PatrickN on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 10:39 AM

I was looking at the Tamiya Red Bull Renault RB6 from 2010 that is coming out soon. It looks like a great kit but I'm not paying $109 for it. That is what a 1/12th scale kit used to cost and I can buy two or three armor kits for that price. They are pricing me right out of this game for a decent kit... and the engine detail is sorely lacking on the RB6... there is a block and pipes but nothing else... ridiculous... great looking subject but way overpriced for what you get.

I groked it online and the instructions are detailed and good but there is more meat on the bone with previous kits. I understand that the engine is coverd by the cowling but there is NOTHING in the engine block but a rectangle and some exhause pipes. These are normally apsirated non-turbocharged engines so there ahs got to be something there.

I was ready to pop for it until I saw the $109 price tag. I love Tamiya but not that much. The old 1/12th kits were only $20 to $30 more than this...

It smacks of the Enzo Ferrari 1/12th that cost over $439... pretty to look at, lovely to hold, but if you break it, consider it sold...LOL!

"the engine detail is sorely lacking"

that's bad for a 1/12 kit. they should have twice the detail as a 1/24 kit.

it is a 1/20th kit... that is why the price STUNNED me! and it is really poor execution of the engine... sad to say, it almost falls into the curbside category... I know they are EFI so there have got to be spark plugs and an intake manifold... nothing is turbocharged anymore... think that Tamiya thinks modelers only like exterior glitz...

I know, prices are getting sort of out of hand.  I have a feeling some of it may be from licensing costs too (in addition to inflation and petroleum prices).  However, there are a couple sites I recommend that have steep discounts.  I ordered the RB6 from here:

www.scalehobbyist.com/.../product.php

That's about the limit I go on a car model.  Another great site is eHobbies.  Shipping with both sites isn't too bad either.

I've yet to build this kit, but it is waiting.  I'm not going to do much detailing to it since it's nearly impossible to find good photos of the engine (I've seen one and there are a number of electrical boxes, oil lines, hoses, etc... not much engine thanks to the covers) but I am going to CF everything :)  I'm definitely doing Mark Webber's car... can't stand Vettel...
