1965 Chevelle Malibu SS 396

Here is quarantine project #2, the Revell 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS 396 Z-16. This kit dates from (I think) 2007 -- at least that's the copyright date on the instructions.

The moldings were quite nice with nothing more than the normal level of flash and parting/mold lines. Nothing much to worry with there. I decided to go with a mild street rod look to this kit and followed the green over silver color scheme shown on the box art model. I used Scalefinishes Chevrolet Silver basecoat with their Green Mist Metallic. No clearcoating.

For kicks, I did a white interior with a black flocked carpet and package shelf. My flocking game still needs work, but that's why we keep building, right? The interior was a funky design, hard to describe but kind of cross between a bucket floor plan and separate door panels. I guess it worked, although the flocking may have messed up the fitment of said door panels just a bit. The dash was two pieces (top and bottom) which would have likely helped if I'd wanted to replicate a separately colored dash pad. The interior had two piece bucket seats, steering wheel/column and a chrome console with shifter.

The engine supposedly replicates the venerable 396 ci Chevy mill. Overall the detail is pretty good. The multipiece assembly went together nicely and the kit shows heater hoses, radiator hoses, separate master cylinder and the obligatory floating alternator. I wanted a quick build so I did not add any additional wires or detailing.

The kit is rounded out with a set of non-descript larger-diameter tires and 5 spoke chrome wheels. One neat thing is that the drilled brake rotors are decals that look quite nice -- except that the decals did not include calipers!! Oh well, can't win them all. I considered lowering the stance a bit, but decided against the extra effort. Plus once all was said and done, I kind of like the raked look.

Here is the whole album.

Really good. Good subject too. The air cleaner decal is super. Does that decal come in the kit?

Thanks. And Yes, that air cleaner decal was in the kit. This kit was box stock, with the exception of the flocked areas nothing aftermarket was added.

My favorite car of all time, the '65 Chevelle SS.  Your build is very well accomplished as an OOB build.  Overall a very clean build.

I build models because I can't afford the real thing!
