mpc mako shark parts, the search is on
Posted by hopeless on Thursday, September 19, 2019 12:46 PM

i recently  aquired an original mako shark kit, which is missing one rear tire, among some other things.  i already own the street fever kit (unbuilt also), and those tires are a little too 80's for me.  anybody have any suggestions?  the pictures i viewed of the built mako shark on the forum really inspired me to seek out and obtain a kit of my own.  my brother and i both built this model when it was new!  any help locating suitable tires (one or a whole set), would be much appreciated.  looking forward to shareing my model experiences with anyone interested.

AMT has a parts pack with 8 Goodyear Polyglas GT tires and another one with a set of four

Firestone Wide Ovals.

thanks for the suggestion, KenK.  the original tires are smaller in diameter in front than in the rear, which makes me wonder how all four being the same will affect the overall look. if i found a complete set of anything that matched with the "big and little" feature, i'd take a chance on them.  i definitely want to use the original rims.  i am also trying to avoid the tires i've seen with the gigantic "goodyear" letters on the sidewalls, allthough if i find a set of big and littles like that, i would try them out.

after reading KenK's reply to my outreach for mako shark tires,i looked into his suggestions, and discovered that the amt polyglass partspack included 2 sizes, and might be of real use to me.  unfortunately, they, too, are scarce, and i found a set of 4 tires on the internet from a private seller which may work. i'm awaiting their arrival. thanks again to KenK for responding to my inquiry.

I, too, built the MPC Mako Shark 1/25th scale kit many moons ago. The vinyl tires were a unique feature of the kit because they were one-piece hollow (billed as an industry first). The kit was released in 1966 and the real 1:1 Mako Shark sported Firestone brand tires. In 1967 MPC released a 1/25th scale kit of the Tiger Shark … based on the International Show Car Association-owned attraction (modified from the Car Craft Magazine Dream Rod). Again, a unique feature of the kit were the hollow tires. Knowing MPC’s propensity for getting maximum return from their tooling investment … it would be logical to assume that the Tiger Shark kit included same vinyl tires that came with the Mako Shark offering. On the ISCA tour, the real 1:1 Tiger Shark wore Firestone tires. Forward to 2018, Round 2/MPC re-issues the Tiger Shark kit and it appears to be true-to-form of the original … complete with hollow Firestone tires with different front/rear diameters. However, the tires are pad-printed with the Firestone logotype/crest in gold with a narrow stripe.  Perhaps the currently available Tiger Shark kit is the best resource for appropriate -- if not identical -- tires for the never re-released Mako Shark kit.

BTW, MPC’s re-released Tiger Shark kit was reviewed in the April 2019-issue of Scale Auto (Page 60). And, it should be noted that the Mako Shark was also available in kit form by Aurora in 1/32nd scale (Kit # 677).

i looked into racer h's suggestion, and wound up purchasing a round 2 tigershark kit. the tires are nice, in fact, i plan to build that kit with those tires.  surprisingly, i found a set of usable tires in my own stash, pirated from of all things, the 59 el camino, by amt.  it included many tire options, so i've decided to use the big and littles that were in that kit on my mako shark build (whenever that is).  now, i'm considering some mods to the street fever vette to differentiate it from the real mako shark.  mabe a roof modification, and definitely a motor mod.  thanks to all who threw suggestions my way.  btw: if a set of authentic mako shark firestones surfaced, i'd be open to offers.
