Chinese six rat rod.
Posted by mini man on Friday, December 08, 2017 8:29 AM

Going to be doing a chinese 6 rat rod!...

Anyone not familiar with a chinese 6 layout? it is two steer axles and (usually) one drive axle.

So I have to make a new chassis - on it's way,and use two identical front axles - - got two kits so one can be robbed. Both kits have a choice of straight or dropped axle, the engine well I have a choice - a diesel or a 1500 ci V12...methinks it will be the 12!!!

She is having a mild roof chop.

With the fabric centre removed.

more soon.

Will build most anything, love American cars muscle etc.Britishvehicles are a buzz too, trucks are great - want to do a jet truck, building parts up...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolls-Royce_Merlin

Just read that the engine weighed 1640 lbs!

It snowed overnight so perhaps the slicks are a bad idea!!

This is the transmission that will be used.

Dressed up what if style with water pump, starter etc, plus valve covers.

A comparison with the Bugatti straight 8.

The aprox position I want..

And primed.

Got the engine sprayed gold, the pipe are being cut down a bit.

The plastruct has arrived,it is 4.5x5mm and just right for sleeving the original chassis. Also the orig floor is being cut out.

Just to give you an idea on the lengthening.

What I am aiming for.....

With that much weight on the nose, you may want to do "duelies" on the front.

Double motorcycle wheels..... on both axles. What a "Mental" image that is !!

Dont worry about the thumb print.... paint it rust and call it battle damage

Cheers guys.Big Smile

Molotowed the tranny and Rolls Royce badges on the valve covers.

In place along with the grille shell.

The part ERTL part Plastruct chassis.

Thinking of the dually idea, the fronts will be ok with 500 lbs per wheel.

Just went through the thread.  This is some real outside of the box thinking.  Outrageous!  Can't wait to see how this one turns out.  Keep up the good work.

Just keep picking away at it...

Not trying to be a PITA but, wouldnt the "stance" look better if the front axle's were reversed or lowered?

Not sure if it would work with 2 axles ..... #1  might need to be lower than  #2

Also thought it would help the motor align with the rear axle better. I noticed its kinda sitting "Tilty way's " on the second axle.

But since I have little to no idea where you are headed with the final assembly,..... feel free to "Ignore" me. However.... you have given me an idea that I now have to build...... Darn !

Dont worry about the thumb print.... paint it rust and call it battle damage

Dont worry about being a PITA as I have arthritis in my lower spine and that is close......Most parts inc the engine are loose at this stage and will come together at the right time.

The wheel's and tire's ..... Yuck ! I have never been a fan of low profile tire's.

A different spoke pattern would be better.... something that resemble's the original rim's

The pie crust drag slick's are perfect..... I'm sorry I cant come up with a better sugestion about the rim's. All I see in my mind is American Racing Mag's all the way around.

To help "set off" the KILLER engine, maybe a set of rim's that look more "Industrial"... ???

Dont worry about the thumb print.... paint it rust and call it battle damage

I agree with timmy.  "Industrial".  I like the wheels on the truck at the top of the thread.  The rears have the big hub and axle flange sticking through, and the fronts are very "industrial" with the big exposed lug nuts.  I was picturing a fire engine type look.

Just keep picking away at it...

Thanks for the feedback gents,I appreciate it.Steelies all rond then.

Going through the decals I discovered two sheets.(stuck together but mint!)

Opened the roof last night, got some salt on the primer today.

You can see by this how much the roof has been chopped by.

Then some flat green - US or IJN not sure now....

Followed by more salt..

Followed by another colour, will do that in a few hours.

Stripping some of the chrome with bleach, but if poss want to keep the reflector portion.

Was thinking about the turbo situation and think it would be better if all the ports feed the turbine..

Fitting the toeboard/floorboards to the tub.

Here it is after 3 coats of rust treatment........

What she looks like now.
