Throw Back Thursday: '58 L'Edsel
Posted by Zoom Zoom on Thursday, September 14, 2017 12:24 PM

Built this sometime in the early-mid '90's. A local guy did a great 1:1 custom chopped '58 Edsel in teal. Smoothed in the bumpers, added a modern interior. It made the Goodguys rounds, even their T-Shirt the following season. It was one of my favorite cars at the time, and I was really happy when the Modelhaus offered it for sale as a transkit for the ubiquitous AMT '57 Ford, which at the time was revisited with a cool modern custom interior option that looked perfectly suited to this Edsel conversion.

I chose a different exterior paint scheme, a pearl orange. Wheels were kitbashed, mirrors from a Mustang. Had a blast building it, and it's held up quite well inside a showcase. If I were building this today it would look quite different, the '90's customs and street rods done in fad-of-the-day monochromatic w/billet and pastel colors might have looked cool and modern at the time but today look a bit old and silly compared to what we're seeing now with really cool restomods that should do a better job of standing the test of time for future decades.

Damn nice. Too bad they did not do more to keep this in the 1:1 line up.

My mother said these were ugly cars. I finally get to prove her wrong! Awesome paint and styling.

My favorite color is clear. I am also ambidexterous, I can screw up equally well with either hand. I am 53 years old and been building for most of that time. :)

Nice tasteful job, Bob, the standard Edsel was not a neat 'blended' design in my opinion, and you have taken some of the awkwardness out of it with your chop, side trim removal, and other custom touches.  Cheers.

I bought this kit at Salvation Army for $3.  I saw pictures of one done as a Pro Mod with wing and blown DOHC 427, tubbed' etc.  I haven't decided what to do just yet.
