General Grant 69 Dodge Charger
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, October 06, 2007 8:45 PM
Okay, so...We've all built a General Lee, right? I'll admit that I'm obsessed with this car. I saw once in a HotRod mag a car that someone had cooked up with a Photoshop program...the "anti" General Lee. I immediately fell in love with the idea. Why NOT give Ulysses S. Grant his own Charger? So I picked up a Charger kit and started working on it. The decals were the only real hinderance with the whole build...they've kept this one 80% complete and in it's box for nearly 2 years. Well boys, it's finally done. Paint is Duplicolor Ford engine enamel (Union army uniforms were blue). Decals came from bugsysjunkers (I've never dealt with the guy before, but after seeing his work I'll def. be returning my business...top quality) and feature a civil war period correct Union Flag, the number 10, as opposed to the 01 of Lee, and bicentennial ('76) Illinois (the home of Gnl Grant) plates. Everything else about the kit is pretty much as it came out of the kit, save for the Vectors which are some of my own castings and the push bar. I used the supplied 383/440 engine, but added an air cleaner setup from my parts box. I also scrrapped the cheesy manifolds from the kit in favor of some headers outta my parts stash. Small block Chevy headers work great since they have the same port locations, etc. I did however open the trunk and cram in a nifty fuel cell and a bottle of giggle gas. Grant will need somethin to keep up with the other General, no? The interior is all stock except I added a scratchbuilt rollcxage Anyhoo, I think that about covers it. This has turned into one of my favorite builds. Would've liked to detailed the engine bay a bit more, but I wanted to keep it somewhat simple. I'm working on a new General Lee that i'll go "nucking futs" with the details. Here are some pics, more soon. Lemme know what ya think.

Great job there...Thumbs Up thats a refreshing change. I like the way you opened up the trunk.....I don't think you'll have to much trouble staying ahead of the General Lee, while your on the JUICE.

Well I like the car but the push bar.. is that a stock item from the AMT General Lee kit? it looks like it alot. That push bar doesn't look right on that car. You did a great job on the rest of the car though as I like it. can you post a roof shot or is that flag not alowed here? I also do busniess with Bugysjunkers from over on another board. Yes his decals are good but watch out for the clear coat though if you clear decals over on your model cars as his doesn't like to be clear coated at all.

Thanks so much guys! Yeah, that's the AMT pushbar. I have another pushbar from a truck kit, but it looked a bit "clunky" IMO. Here's your roof shot:

Yeh i have to agree...i have a 69 kit waitng to be made into the General Grant after i too saw it in hot rod magazine!! Although i think the colour is a bit to light on your build??
Mine will be the navy/darker blue that is closer to the union blue. Love getting these ideas from hot rod/muscle car mags!! They're a great source of ideas for builders these days!!!Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Yea, your right, the color is abit darker blue. But his build isn't bad at all though, I really like it but for a push bar Big Smile that is in the front as those AMT push bars just doesn't look right to me.

Thanks again folks! I really appreciate the feedback. I agree...my color is a bit light, but I couldn't find a darker blue that I loved AND hadn't already used on a previous build. With close to 100 built kits on shelves it gets hard to be original with colors...lol.

"Great job! Any chance of seeing the two generals together?"

but of course. I'm currently building a "Georgia General" and will post a pic of the 2 together as soon as it's done. I would show my old General with it, but I tore it down last night to gie it a pro touring makeover a la the Rides episode with Kenny ayne Shepard's "Extreme Lee". Stay tuned folks.

Man that is COOL! What a great idea.

Makes me wonder what it would look like in Lee Petty trim...

What a great idea!

We've seen enough "General Lees" here to last a lifetime...this is a real nice change of pace!

And finally...I think admin will be ok with the roof on this one!!! Wink

I hate to say this but I agree with that. Why block one and leave another come on. There all the same in a way.
