1965 Chevelle SS 396 Z-16 - Finished! Outdoor Pics!
Posted by modelcarjr on Wednesday, May 08, 2019 7:41 AM

I found this kit at the last contest and vendor show I attended. I don't have a 65 Chevelle and wasn't aware that there was a Z-16. The instructions indicate that only 200 were built. So this will be a nice addition to my collection.

I've started with cleaning up the body which was in great shape and primered it. I've also done some basic painting of other parts. Looks like most of them were red from pictures on the internet. I'm going to go with Light Metallic Blue as I don't have any Nassau Blue Metallic. I may buy a can since I won't have much opportunity in the next few days as it may rain for the next week. Interior will be black and white. Thanks for looking! Cool

I have the 2-in-1 kit in the stash.  Haven't decided on color, yet.  Looking forward to yours!

From curbside classics

But Chevy also wanted in on the mid-sized action, where the Pontiac GTO had created a whole new genre. Their response was the mid-year 1965 Z16 SS396, of which only 201 were built. They were never advertised, although they got plenty of publicity otherwise. Dan Blocker (“Hoss” in Bonanza) was one of its big fans. Why Chevy didn’t put the SS396 into production in 1965 is a good question, and I’m surely not the first to ask. It was a wickedly fast machine, and those that got their hands on one were highly enthusiastic.

Just three colors were available, Regal Red, Tuxedo Black and a light Crocus Yellow

The the convertible from what I see is rumored, no documentation exists, and if it was built it was for GM bigwigs.

I haven't gotten much done. Bad weather and some other rat-killin'. But I painted the inner fenders and underside of the top flat black and also painted the interior components with flat black and semi-gloss white. Thanks for looking! Cool

Thanks, McLovin! I appreciate your comment! Sorry it took me so long to reply but with weather issues and my annual trip to Indy for the 500 I haven't devoted as much time to this build as I would like.

I did get paint on the body today, although it was a bit humid so I didn't add the clear yet.  I decided to paint it red with Testors Italian Red lacquer. I also foiled the scrips and letters on the hood before paint and then revealed them with some lacquer thinner. There's a bit of orange peel so I may try to rub it out a bit befure adding the clear, although it is going to be difficult on the top of the door line. I hope I don't rub out any edges.

I've also been working on engine assembly and interior doors and dash. I should be able to move more quickly now. Thanks for looking! Cool

Thanks, mmthrax! I appreciate your comment!

This one is moving a little slow but I finally found a window to get a couple of coats of clear on the body. So now, once I rub it out and get it foiled I'll be ready to slam this one together! Thanks for looking! Cool

Finished polishing out the 65 and completed the foil. Waiting in the background is the new 68 Chevelle. So, two Chevelles in a row! I don't know what color I will paint it but probably not red. The weather is good for paiinting now so I thought I would at least get 1 body, maybe 2, painted. Thanks for looking! Cool

Thanks, MrMike! I appreciate your comment!

Painted the 68 Chevelle today. I first taped off the rocker panel area and painted it Tamiya Semi-gloss black. Once dry, I taped it off and painted the rest of the body Tamiya Light Blue Metallic over a base coat of Krylon Bright Aluminum.  Hopefully, its close to one of the blues for the 1968 model year. Paint went on well today so it will take very little rubbing to finish the body. In the meantime, I have to get back to the 65! Thanks for looking! Cool

Thanks, Prowler! I appreciate your comment!

I finished the interior and it turned out pretty nicely. Now with the window glass in place it is installed tightly in the body. I only lost the door lock plunger on the right side. I will put a dot of chrome on the door so it will be in the locked position. On to the engine and chassis. Thanks for looking! Cool

Thanks, SFD! I appreciate your comment! Are you building? I'd like to see your builds on the Forum.

Interior is in, engine and chassis are mated with the body and the wheels.  Almost done. Just have to hang the hardware and a few more details. Thanks for looking! Cool

Thanks, SFD! Your Lark is an oldie but a goodie!

Finished the 65 and it went together well. Pretty nice kit. The only thing left to do is to try to find two crossed flag decals in my stash for the front fenders. Here are a few pics and I'll post outdoor pics after it stops raining tomorrow! Thanks for looking! Cool

Very nice, JR! They always come alive in the daylight. It also helps that I'm partial to red with a white and black interior (like my 1:1 Mopar :) ). Still watching. Geeked

Thanks, Prowler, MrMike, Chucky and Charger! I appreciate your comments! I glued the mirror back on and also found some crossed flag 396 engine badge decals and although they don't fix exactly they look pretty good. Thanks for looking! Cool

Great job on the hottest Chevelle. Lucky you to find the 396 engine decals. It seems hugely obvious that engine fender decals would sell like crazy. Can't find them anywhere for my  need of 62-64 full size Pontiac 421 embems!

Thanks, Litespeed and mmthrax! I appreciate your comments!

Litespeed, the decals that I have are on a sheet of various Camaro scripts and emblems produced by Keith Marks. I didn't see any Pontiac decals on his site for 62-64 Pontiacs but maybe if you contact him he would make some for you.
