Spenser's 2015 Ford Mustang GT
Posted by mrmike on Monday, February 27, 2017 9:52 AM

I got into a discussion about Ford Mustangs and was kind of "challenged" into building a "what-if" Mustang.  This Mustang would have been the car driven by Boston private cop Spenser if the TV series, Spenser For Hire was on the air today.  Since the cars used were well used local cars, I thought let's use something newer and I happen to have the model kit handy for this build.  I started by blowing apart the Mustang and cleaned up the body.

I searched through my extra decals and found some left over from previous Mustang builds.

I've decided on a color...Model Master Fathom Green Metallic.  Yes, I know it's a GM color, but Ford never offered a dark green for the 2015 Mustang.

Thanks KWT!  Unfortunately, I found a large dog hair in the paint of the Mustang and it is now in the stripper.  Once that is removed, it's back to primer and then painting.

Finding dog hair in the paint is becoming a common occurrence for me and it is frustrating!  Nevertheless, I will soldier on and get the Mustang repainted.  This morning, I detailed the instrument panel and interior.  I used the extra '06 Mustang decals that I have accumulated over time and paint detailed the small gauges in the dash center.

I got about 98% of the old primer and paint off of the Mustang.  I'll finish sanding and will apply a coat of primer to check my work.

Nice Work Mike! I REALLLYYYYYYYY LOVE that color, fathom green! I see a "bullet" Mustang clone painted that color in my future!!! Thanks for sharing! I also know your issues of "pet hair", (dogs, cats, etc) all too well! I was just sanding a cat hair out of a hood for a 64 Plymouth I am building.... UGH!!!

Thank you Rudy!  Fathom Green is a nice color and reminiscent of Highland Green of the '68 Bullitt Mustang or Ivy Green of the Spenser For Hire '65 Mustang.  I had started sanding to remove the dog hair and had to strip the entire car since I couldn't get a smooth and flat surface.  I think I took the right path.

I got Spenser's 2015 Mustang painted with Model Master Fathom Green Metallic.  Looks a lot better than before with that big dog hair on the hood.  This is just two mist coats of paint.

There is no way you will have to polish that paint job!!  Very nice work with the rattle can

There are a couple flicks of trash in the paint and I may try to polish them out with a very light wet sanding or with Mequiar's Scratch X 2.0.  This Fathom Green paint seems to have a lot of flake in it.  Much like the Testors One Coat Lacquers.

I'm itrigued by the "stand" that is holdig the body while you paint it.

What is it called?

Where did you get it?

How does it hold the car - spring pressure, or ?

I bought  Rubbermaid turntable, but need something to elevate the car, andideally something that grabs the car only at small specific spots that will be hidden after assembly, and that enable painting first the inside and then the outside of the body.

Jim, the stand is made by Tamiya and is called the Tamiya Work Stands.  They come two to a box...one for holding bodies and the other is for holding small parts and comes with four spring clips.  The body holder has two adjustable spring clips that applies pressure to the inside of the body.  Both stands rotate.  They retail for around $22.00 for both and you can find them at your local hobby shop or at online sellers.

My pleasure Jim G!

Since I'm kinda stuck inside with the house with the massive Nor'Easter outside, I clearcoated the Mustang body this morning with two good coats of Testors Wet Look Clear.  This afternoon, I'll start paint detailing and apply any decals.

mrmike,

You did an outstanding paint job with the rattle can. Was there any sanding involved to the primer, or are you just able to get that great a job out of a can all the time? Seeing the smooth, shiny job you laid down makes me fee a lot better about my decision to stick with rattle cans for now. Super job!

I gave the body a light sanding with 6000 grit sanding pad to knock down any rough spots in the primer.  Then I misted on several light coats of paint until I acheived the coverage I wanted.  It took a while, but I'm happy with the results.

I have finished Spenser's 2015 Ford Mustang GT.  I want to thank all those who have taken the time to view and to comment on my WIP.

Nice work, Mike. That GPS screen decal really makes that dashboard pop, and the detailing throughout is really good.

Once that nor'easter stops a blowin' you will have to take some outside pics. The ones you took seem dark and I can't make out your detailing as I could with your earlier wip pictures

Mike, I not a fan of taking model car pictures outside at this time of year because the sun is fairly low in the sky and produces long shadows, but I did take four new ones this morning.

What do you think?

Thanks for doing the new pics outside. The rear quarter shot does the build justice. Very nice job.
