1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird
Posted by mrmike on Thursday, August 1, 2019 2:23 PM

I was looking through some of the shelves in my bookcases this morning and remembered this Superbird needing repair and had pushed it aside for later.  Later is here now and I cleaned up the body and gave it a light polishing.  The color has faded a bit over the years (30+ years) and I had assembled it rather quickly (which shows) and I added some decals from my parts box.  I have plenty of new builds to consider, but I also need to take care of some repairs, too.

If I break this model down, I'll end up repainting and repairing everything I may find wrong.  If I do, then I'll replace the wheels with Rallye wheels (I've only seen one Superbird with Magnum 500s), repaint the body and interior, spruce up the engine and maybe wire it, paint the air cleaner, refinish the chrome, get new decals and add Bare Metal Foil.  It will be like building a new kit!

That really looks nice Mike. If you do rejuvenate it, it'll be awesome I'm sure.

I wish I still had the one I built as a kid. I think I used every decal the kit had.  I have another kit that I'm planning on building the same way I did way back when... maybe someday..

Well, I kept on looking over the Superbird and things started to fall off...with a little pushing and shoving!  The interior and glass are out.

I found a set of Rallye wheels and wider tires.

This is dust turning to dirt!  I'll break this down and wash everything!

More to come...

You got a barnfind in your house!  Cool!  Thats a nice color on it.   I hate how even though I have all my models in a case that I have tried to make dust proof, I still have to dust my models once in a while.

Other than the ones that I have rebuilt, I haven't cleaned any of mine in years!

Since the chrome plating on the rear bumper was flaking off, I decided to strip the rest of the plating and I found Petty Blue plastic under the chrome.  I think this was the original plastic color on the body.

I have dismantled the engine and will strip the chrome from the carbs and alternator.  I may leave the valve covers plated.

The rear suspension came off rather easily, but the front suspension was much more difficult and I broke off a couple of braces for the suspension.  I used a couple pieces of styrene rod to replace them with.

The Superbird got a bath this afternoon.  I need to remove the "Plymouth" decals from the rear quarters and then its primertime!

I would suggest stripping all the old paint before priming it. Are you going for the factory look? If so, remove the chrome from the valve covers as well and paiint them engine color.

Prowler,

What is your preference for the stripper! I just had a 60 Buick orange peel on me. Not happy! I know you have been at it a long time and to me, one of the wisest and a great builder.

60Buick, just because your paint job orange peeled on you doesn't necessarily mean you should strip the paint, unless the entire paint job is junk!  Try wetsanding the paint to get a smooth finish.

Nice project you have going on.

You're welcome and thanks!

Well, it was bound to happen.  I broke the center screen.  I was in the process of gluing it all back together when I realized that I was missing a small piece.

I cut out a piece of photoetch screen and a piece of plain 0.020 styrene and superglued them together.  When all was dry, I bent the piece slightly around the handle of a hobby knife.

Fits pretty good!  A little more sanding and filing and it should be perfect.  Just need to paint it flat black.

Thanks. That is what it will get. I had gone through the older forums on the topic and too many different ones, so that is why I asked you. Not the first time you have gave me good advice. Thanks again.

The fumes are very wicked. Don't breath it. Use at least a dust mask. Keep it away from people and pets. I use a Tupperware container deep enough to put the body in and cover it, shouldn't take more than a day to see results. I scrub with a toothbrush under running water and reapply on stubborn spots.

After priming the chassis, I looked it over and discovered many sinkholes in the plastic.

At this point, I don't care.  I am forging ahead with paint and assembly.

I removed the decals from the body using a combination of scotch tape and medium grit sandpaper.  Now to clean up the rest of the body and prep for primer and paint.

I loosely covered the center of the chassis with tape without burnishing it down and made a couple of quick passes with Testors Hemi Orange Lacquer.  Not bad for a first time.

Thanks Stew!

Maybe not the clearest picture, but you can see the round styrene I added under the rear wing supports.  When I removed them as part of deconstruction, I broke the pins.  This is to replace them.

I drilled the cylinder heads for plug wires and them I painted the engine with Mopar Street Hemi Orange Engine Paint.  I know, I usually do this procedure the other way around, so maybe there hope for me yet?

I removed the exhaust from the rear axle and of course, I broke them in two.  Using the chassis as a jig, I clamped the exhaust onto the chassis and glued the exhaust back together.  When they have dried, I'll remove them and clean up and paint the glue joint.

I repainted the front suspension and added it to the chassis.

I cleaned up the rear axle and repianted it.  I need to make a set of rear shocks and mounts since this kit doesn't include them.

I sat down this evening with my Dremel Motor Tool and started grinding the excess plastic from the exhaust pipes to get them round and generally the same size.  Then I mocked them up and applied a little more glue to help solidify the joints.  Tomorrow, I'll repaint the exhaust system.

The 440 6-Barrel has been painted and wired.  I'll detail the carbs and install the air filter when I have finished detailing that.

I wanted white letter tire markings, but I didn't have any.  I remembered these yellow tire letters from my trips to NNL East and I cut them out, dipped them in water and applied them to the tires.  Tomorrow, I'll coat them with flat clearcoat.

I finally got my decals today from KWT.  Thanks KWT!!!

I've been picking away at the interior.  Still more detail to add.

The 440 6-Barrel is nearly done.  I painted the air cleaner with Testors Competition Orange enamel paint and it is in the dehydrator until tomorrow.  It should be dry by then.

Coming along. Speedway makes a set which includes door panel trim and  markings as well for 15 bucks. How much were those?
