dusting them off...

  • Hello everyone!,

My name is Kirk..I've been away from the scene for a while..(first wife said grown men shouldn't play with toys..well GOT RID OF HER.. now I've got a new one who says its great.!)..Anyway..I'm really excited to dust off all my modeling stuff and get back into it. I'm glad to see it's still going strong..I do have a question for anybody..Way back when (about 10 years ago..) I was a member of a modeling club in Fairborn,Ohio..I'm in Dayton, the club was called C.A.R.B.S.  Vern Heizer was the founder and president.  I'm trying to look them up again but can't seem to locate them..Unfortunately most of the hobby shops around me have closed down and I don't see any postings on the events calender for the annual show we hosted..Can anyone help me out..Do they still exist?

??? where did the eighties go???

  • Heh, you, too?  I'm getting back in after a several-decade hiatus.  Since my wife disappears back in her 'craftroom' for hours at a time, I decided to get back into it so I'd have something fun to do when the weather is bad, or I just don't want to do any real work.

Unfortunately, I've jumped in with both feet, and  cleaning 1/24 scale PE parts without loosing them and applying carbon-fiber decals to curved features is sometimes far from relaxing.

I used to build models when I was a kid. In fact, I was really heavily into it when we were stationed at Wright-Patt in the 60's.  I didn't know of modeling clubs then, and bought pretty much all of my models from the base PX, though.  My, how time flies.

  • Welcome back to the hobby KAM. I don't think CARBS is around anymore but I could be wrong, I went to their contest around 6 - 7 years ago maybe and it wasn't very well attended. I remember Vern, he built some amazing stuff but haven't seen him in ages. Anytime I was in Dayton I'd try to make time to visit "The Hobby Shop" on 725 is it? Real busy street with a mall and all that. Great store but I've heard they're down to R/C stuff, whoop dee do. They used to have tons of kits and the best selection of detail parts I've ever run across in hobby shops around here (I live in Cincy).

  • That was a great shop, tons of kits and all the detail stuff...just like Johnny's Toys in Greenhills here in Cincy, they closed up too. Support your LHS!!! If you buy local you may pay a bit more but what goes around comes around. The guy who owns that store may buy what YOU make or sell. Well I'm getting OT here but relevant considering the world economy is tanking.
