G'day from Australia
Posted by redalfalfa on Monday, March 05, 2018 6:11 AM

Hi all

I'm a freelance graphic designer based in Australia.  I started building some lego kits recently as a way to relax after a days work, but chatted with a good friend who has been modelling for about 30 years now, building planes and he got me thinking about getting into modelling again, the lego is good, but I think modelling is the challenge I need.  Cars are my thing, I use to build models when I was a young bloke, but life, career and family eventually consumed all my spare time.  I'm now ready to get back into it.  I started watching youtube clips of guys doing their thing building cars and I am completely awestruck with what they can do.  I've been researching techniques, tools (I have none) and so on.  This is a new chapter for me, I haven't even purchased my first model yet, but looking forward to starting.

Any suggestions on where to start, tools I might need or even complete toolkits or any resources that you regularly go to for info would be a great start.  I live in a rural/coastal town on the east coast of Australia so I'm a long way from suppliers, so most of my purchasing will be made online.

Happy to be here and can't wait to get started.

Welcome to the forum, red. This is a good place to learn the ropes. Most of us here have taken an extended break from the hobby when real life got busy, but then we eventually drifted back the the hobby we loved as kids. I hope you enjoy your return to the hobby. As for suggestions on tools, etc, I suggest starting a thread in the 'Builder's Corner' part of the forum, you'll get more responses there. Enjoy.

G'day mate, and welcome to SA.  Your story will be familiar to just about everyone on here, I can sure relate to it.

If you can get some SA back issues, Jan 2000 has a 'Getting Started' article, lists hobby knife, paint brushes, sanding sticks and assorted sandpaper, needle files, masking tape, toothpicks, various tweezers (absolute necessity), model cements and glues, and paints of course, both spray cans and brush.  It then goes on to list intermediate and advance supplies, as you and your skills progress.

Get into it, mate, buy a kit or 3 and enjoy yourself.  Cheers.

Thanks Steve.  I'll grab that back issue, just what I needed.
