After many years of building model cars/trucks, because of the price, I am going to try building Semi Trucks. I will work on the trucks of the 1970-1980's. So, can anybody help me with details about the engines that were used in those days? What make/model and colour for the different makes. Like my c's& trk's, I want to do as much detailing as I can.

I have contacted the company's that built and sold these machines, but nothing is available anymore. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Seasons Greetings to All.

Trucks that era used a variety of CAT 3606 & 3408 engines, as well as Detroit and Cummins.  Look at for sale ads for trucks of those years and they'll tell the engine and transmissin.

If you click on this picture and go to my Flickr page and go to Albums I have a lot of reference pictures.

AMT kits generally came with either Cummins or Detroits. Detroits were Alpine green and Cummins were tan, unless they were in a KW or Peterbilt which had their engines painted white. International painted all engines red except for the IH engine which was blue. The Ford L series had the early Ford version of the 3208 Cat. It could be blue or yellow especially if updated. Many of the Ertl IH trucks (some re-released as AMT) had IH v-8 engines. The revells offered the 3406 Cat and 3408 cat. These could be white or yellow depending on the year model. There are plenty of others including resin options. Remember it depends on what you want to build, factory fresh, older restoration, well used or custom. If you have any specific questions ask.

I hope this helps.

This is the 3408 Cat that comes in the Revell of Germany W900 KW. (Wrecker is the most recent)

I am extremely jealous. If for any reason it's missing the duck for the hood or it's broken, let me know. I have a couple in resin.

My favorite color is clear. I am also ambidexterous, I can screw up equally well with either hand. I am 53 years old and been building for most of that time. :)
