using 1:25 scale parts in 1:24 scale models
Posted by Old Hound Dawg on Sunday, May 17, 2020 5:32 PM

I'm building a 1:24 scale 1971 Barracuda and trying to recreate a car an old high school buddy had back then. The kit I have comes with a 426 hemi so I'm swapping some spare parts out to make it a single 4 barrel. Thats going well. The big problem I have is the decals and the hood. His car had no hood scoops. I found a 70 cuda with the correct decals and maybe a hood I could modify a little easier, problem is it's a 1:25 scale model. Question is now is the scale close enough for me to cough up another thirty bucks for the kit?

G'day Old Hound Dawg.  There will be an obvious difference in size.  I don't know the dimensions of the hood, but let's say the width is 65inches, which =1651mm.

In 1/25 scale the hood would be 65/25 = 2.6 inches wide (66.04mm wide).

In 1/24 scale the hood would be 65/24 = 2.708 inches wide (68.79mm wide).

The difference is 0.108inches (2.75mm), close to 7/64".  This width difference would need to be filled with scrap plastic, and the hood would need to be lengthened as well.  Hope this helps.  Cheers

This has been a problem since I started building models over 50 years ago. It is unfortunate that the modeling manufactruers couldn't build their models in a single standardized scale.
