What cars do you like to model and why?

ok some guys model everything and some don't. Figured this might be a cool topic for you car guys.

I have a 99% tendency to make everything either a super stock drag car a street/strip car or a gasser. I grew up going to the drag strip every weekend with my uncle in the later 80s...a time when allot of the 70s superstockers and modified productions that were no longer competitive were run as bracket cars. Unfortunately I missed the 60s and 70s glory days of those cars but still remember allot of there last days as lowly bracket cars. Something about a car that's not tubbed that pops the wheels up at the tree gets me.Those old paint jobs(that I can't paint...sigh) I remember a few of them.I love it makes my heart beat fast....i even watch nostalgia drag racing on my phone when I model. Even my hack job cars as a kid were drag cars. 

Anyways what is your model car passion.So what do you model and why?? Do you love lowriders cause the guy down the street had one when you were 8. Customs cause uncle Bill had a leadsled? Please tell.

I almost never do a drag racing car but as I consider this, they have much more " personality" than unmodified cars and there are few rules and constraints as opposed to factory stock. Good topic.

I like to build almost any type.  I have built factory stock, however most of my stock builds are at least day one(mags, headers, dual exhaust, etc.).  Some of my more enjoyable builds are full customs.  I enjoy building drag cars; I did grow up during those glory days of the 60's and it was wonderful.  However, it seems when I get into a slump, building a short-track racer will bring me back.  All my racing builds, at the present, are fictional; that way there is no accuracy requirements.

I build models because I can't afford the real thing!

I build largely factory stock from the 20s to the 70s. I occasionally venture into street rod or street machine territory. Plus the occasional helicopter or airplane.

I tend to lean towards the 70s era street machines.  I was born in 71, so my earliest car related memories are of that era.  I was in high school at the height of pro street, so I also like that whole vibe too.

I do mostly hot rods and the odd muscle car, but if I get an idea, I'll try anything. But I don't do cookie cutter anything. I don't just paint and assemble. I strive for personality and uniqueness. Rat rods and patina hot rods appeal to me for that reason.

Pretty much nothing but factory stock for me with a smattering of mild custom or street machine.

I personally really enjoy the research involved, and yes, the rigidity required to build a correct as possible factory stock model.

Factory stock building often carries the stigma of being "easy", but if you strive to get it right, it's not that easy to do it well.

It requires a considerable amount of discipline, much like a military or aviation modeler who strives for accuracy.

I like to respond to someone who considers factory stock easy by replying that really, building custom models is easier, because there are absolutely no rules.

That might appeal to many, but I enjoy the fact that there are some strict boundaries to what must be done.

I have added greatly to he excitement of building factory stock in recent years by concentrating on completely modernizing as many of the obsolete vintage annuals from the late '50s to the late '60s as I can.

There is so much interesting subject matter available from years gone by that I will be able to keep myself busy building mostly factory stock models until my dying day without ever starting a modern kit.

And my collection will be diverse and valuable to boot! Big Smile

Anyways nice to here the responses. I will add that as a kid I did build a bunch of monogram NASCAR models too....forgot about them.

Weathered hotrods I like that idea also....may have to try that sometime.

Day one would be factory stock as it appeared on the showroom floor or assembly line.

Day 2 refers to a car that was mildly modified some time later.

A day 2 build might be a mostly stock car with the addition of an Edelbrock intake, Holley carb, a set of headers and a set of Cragar S/S mags, as an example.

Ha ha ha ha!!! I tried to build the Tommy Ivo 4 engine dragster and gave up when I got to the headers. Each header pipe needs to be individually glued to a flange. Plus, all the header pipes had ejector pin marks that needed to be sanded which ruined the chrome.

I went to my first model show 10 years ago, I was a day one builder now I have a bad addiction. Im a day 43er. I got hooked on aftermarket resin and Photo etch, braided lines. I have a love for cars of all types so I love to go the extra mile on details.

At this time im building a Dodge Charger Daytona promod i'll be posting later on as i finish it up. Once its done I have a Jade gernade thats about done, and then a Porsche 917k. Ive considered a cup car from the 80s.

WOW.  Not sure I can give a straight answer to this.  The truth is I will build just about anything with wheels (and occasionally without). Stock muscle, reproduction of some real car from my past, brass era, full customs, lowriders, stock and custom motorcyles, ratrods, lead sleds, and occasionally things that are difficult to classify.  For example, my current projects are a stock 69 charger (pretty much out of the box), and traditional hotrod 53 chevy, Jaguar XJS TWR, and a ???(starting from a simplified Monogram Porsche Carrera and 3D printing all kinds of parts to create and art deco style thing). 


I enjoy the variety of building different styles and always trying something new (new technique, airbrush paint, some repurposed household item, etc). This approach probably keeps me from truly mastering certain aspects of building but keeps it fun for me. My "slump busters" are usually something from the space genre, often star trek or some "space ship" from my imagination.

      I like the cars of the thirties and special cars with wire wheels. Why? I just like making wire Wheels ! The model can be dead stone stock, fair to middlin in the molding and execution. But hand wired wheels make them stand out!

I am newly returned to the game after a 50+ year pause, and find myself leaning to Euro sports cars of the 50s and 60s. MGB, Alfa Giulietta, a 1/16 Porsche 356, Mercedes 300SL (Gull Wing) are most of what I have so far, and a Ferrari 250GTO has been en route from Canada for over a month, thanks to the lockdown.

I grew up in the 60's & 70's muscle car era so that has a big influence on my choice of builds. I build of coarse kits of what cars I have actually owned. I usually build two versions of each kit, stock and customized street muscle. I build cars from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Nothing is straight out of the box. I always add touches to the build such as plumbing and wiring. When I paint a factory stock vehicle I research and paint the body and interior utilizing the factory color schemes. Street customized muscle I might change the color.

Besides the choices above I'll also do some luxury type cars. Such as Cadillacs, Lincolns, Impalas, etc... I also have trucks; pickups and semi. Only a few motorcycles in my stash, an 83 Yamaha Virago xv920j to match my real bike and a couple of Harleys one is a chopper. Last but not least a couple of old speed boats and trailers.

Oop's, forgot... Some Indy pace cars and Richard Petty's stock cars.

I also have recently returned to the hobby after 40-45 years. My builds tend to be primarily 1/25 scale drag cars of the 'gasser' variety. They are typically cars from the 50s-60s-70s and also include muscle cars, trucks, customs and I've done a few boats.
I'm working on a diorama of a 70s drag strip with the starting line, pits, and a shop building for repair work.

I never got rid of all my modeling stuff from before so I have some old builds, some new kits, my tools, etc. I found some old bottles of Testors enamel paint marked .15 cents. Many were dried out but some I opened, stirred well, and seem to be ok. I have quite a few new kits that are marked $1.49 that were never opened.

In the 70s I raced a '67 Fairlane GT with a 390/4spd and later with a 427 MR. Strictly for fun, I never competed in any points classes. The track had a class they called X-stock and it was were they put all the people with their street machines racing for fun on the weekends.

Being in the UK, I go for what I see on the street or on the TV. My favourites are world rally cars, saloon race cars, sports racing cars, Moto GP bikes. As we are waiting to move house and have packed most of my 'stuff' away, I've gone for egg planes, seaplanes, Dave Deal hotrods, weird stuff mainly that I don't need to paint much (spray booth packed away).
