Interior appearance of '63 Super Duty Tempest
Posted by Wick Humble on Sunday, February 2, 2020 3:38 PM

I bought the large-scale diecast 'model' of the '63 Super Duty Tempest that won the Daytona Challenge driven by Paul Goldsmith, for Ray Nichels garage.  Whereas I know that 'stock cars' were much more stock back in the day, this Asian toy has virtually the OEM seats, gauges, trim and so forth; that has to be wrong.  It isn't bad for authenticity otherwise, which is damning with faint praise!  Engine mods, etc. won't be hard to remedy, I hope!  I have photos of other contemporary Pontiacs, but would much prefer 'the real deal' to emulate. I have the same request in to the Little Indians Chapter of POCI, but no responses yet, tho I'm a member.

According to Bill Collins, the project engineer for PMD, they named the twelve or so Tempests "Power Shift" because of the option of tandem Power Glide transmissions in the rear, and the choice of clutch or torque convertor linkage with engine power, which allowed un-clutched gear changes to be made after launch.  At the big oval, this car was very fast, as the 421 was not restricted to one carbueretor, and ran two AFB's, for some race-winning top end!  Beat Ferrari GTO's and Gran Sport Corvettes, including one driven by AJ Foyt.

As a long time Pontiac fan, I would have loved to have heard that car coming down the straight with the dual quad carbs wide open. Maybe one day a 1/24 or 1/25 scale plastic kit will appear.
