Jeep CJ-7 build
Posted by PatrickW on Sunday, July 21, 2019 4:14 AM

I'm reading the latest Scale Auto Magazine and have started to build the Monogram version of the Jeep CJ-7, as per the magazine article on both blue and yellow versions. I been able to find the 'blue' kit online and have the chassis rolling with engine etc in place.

I'm looking at the last page of the article and the photo's show both versions 'towing' various trailers.

I notice in my kit there is no tow hook/ball, has this been added from the spares box or are these just 'staged' to show what they could be like when towing various trailers?

Most likely the hitch was sourced from the spare parts box.  I built a modern trailer hitch using styrene sheet and tubing plus a pin frrom my wife's sewing box.  Here's some pictures of how I built it on an AMT Dodge Dually.  Make a set of end plates allowing for clearance of any accessories on the frame of your vehicle.  Add a square tube from plate to plate inside the vehicle frame.  Add a square tube in the center of the hitch frame and make a frame to be inserted into the receiver (the square tube in the frame center) with a pin and ball.  I use to own a pickup with a towing frame and used that for reference for my hitch and towing frame.  There are many types of towing hitches, so do an image search for a towing hitch that would suit your needs.

Patrick....your presumption is correct, the photos were staged without actual trailer hitches.

But trailer hitches are very easy to scratchbuild if you don't have any leftovers from other kits, and given space limitations for the article I didn't want to take the addtional time/space to cover that subject in detail. .

Good luck with your CJ-7 project....hope you have as much fun building it as I did.

Thanks for the info Tim. I've come accross and few minor snags and am following your build and taking on the tips you suggest in the article and mixing the parts that are available in the kit.

I doubt if mine will be up to your excellent quality, and thanks for the magazine article that will no doubt help and inspire others to buy and build this kit.

I've finished it. It's in 'Other Models' as my wife calls it a utility vehicle!
