working with PE parts
Posted by montanaphil on Monday, March 12, 2018 2:35 PM

I am an old dog and trying to learn new tricks. 30 years ago when I was doing model F1 cars there were no PE parts. Now I am trying to work with them and need some guidance. I hope this is the proper place for this question.

I have a 1/20 Tamiya BT50, old kit. I have purchased a PE set for it and am not sure of a few things. Painting parts, primer first then color? Bend parts first then paint? Attache with CA glues?

The rear wing of the kit is not accurate but the PE set has the proper side pieces for the wing. The kit pieces have locating tabs to alling when glueing. PE has no tabs, how do you get it alinged prioperly when glueing up? Glue up to wing before painting or paint and then glue up?

I have several 1/12 F1 kits but I want to practice on the 1/20's before hitting the big stuff. PE is amazing and I want to get comfortable with it and your help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Phil , I dont do a lot of pe but i can say you definitely want bend them before painting if possible. Depending in the type of part and type of paint you may or may not want to primer. CA glue work for attaching but some pe parts are so small the can be attached with paint or clear parts glue.. real trick with gluing pe is to not use to much glue.
