AMT 55 Nomad kit no.637
Posted by Alcopa1 on Friday, February 17, 2017 12:33 PM

I just picked this kit up at my LHS (old stock as I think its a 2009  release) 'cause I had a hankering to build a remake of an old '55 gasser I did  when I was much younger! I just assumed all the old parts would be included but I should have been smarter ...Its just like the '57 Chevy kit no. 638 which I bought a while ago (but at the time I wanted to build a "stocker" so it didn't bug me all that much ) ...I just didn't realise/think that AMT had "sanitized" the Nomad as well ... so I'm not sure when this was done as this kit has been re-released numerous times any of you know when the "Drag" and "Custom" parts were removed as obviously I'd need to get an earlier version of the kit but with all the "goodies"

Ususally the Nomad kits with the light green and white top Nomad on the box cover had the gasser parts included, as these gasser parts work well with AMT's '55 Chevy kit also.

I believe this kit was issued during the great Walmart debacle, which nearly destroyed the domestic model car industry. Many AMT kits released during this era had any optional parts removed from their kits to reduce manufacturing costs as much as possible. The 55 Nomad was also released in Walmart specific box art with a green/white roof car that may also be devoid of optional parts, though other releases with this same colour car on the box art had the parts. It is quite confusing trying to determine which releases has the extra parts and which don't, though most releases of this kit have them. Your best bet is to ask the forum about a specific release before buying, just to be sure. I wouldn't be surprised if Round 2 has restored the optional parts on a subsequent release. It's a great kit, and one of my all time favorites.

Most Wal Mart kits have the checkerboard boxes. Buyer's choice kits were another Wal Mart kit.

The later AMT kits have the contents printed on the bottom of the box. All one needs to do to see what's inside is check the bottom of the box. If's it's not on the box bottom print, it's not inside.

The only nomad kits in my stash are the AMT Ertl #6592--Blue with white top.   All of these contain the drag parts and El Camino custom version parts.  If you have a problem finding the kit you need, PM me and I can help with parts or a kit.

Thankyou for your kind offer , but my little problem is solved...we had our model club meeting yesterday and naturally I squeaked about the Nomad kit , one of the other members offered me the Johnny Lightning AMT/Ertl version of the 55 Nomad kit no. 38461 which has all of the bits I need plus it has a 1/64th die cast of the Nomad in Turquoise and white! I had no idea that a Johnny Lightning version was out there. While I was at it he also had the Johnny Lightning '64 Pontiac GTO (No.38462) partially built but unpainted so I snagged it as well ... what a great hobby filled with great people!!
