Models by association

Just curious, whats with sudden surge in models being linked to  a brand or movie. I mean, some of them are really grasping at straws. A bit like the Beverly hills cop Chevy nova. I mean, if someone loves Beverly hills cop enough to build the Nova, then surely they'd have the skill to just make a replica without a box suggesting it should be.

Same with AMT and Coca cola. Even in the Diecast world, they do, Godfather Cadillac, Smokey and the Bnadit police cars, Dukes of hazzard police cars, Chalie angel LTD wagon, etc etc and black and white a 1/18 Dodge monaco 'terminator ' edition....which just pushes the price  up. I want just a normal Black and white Monaco without the terminator stuff and branding price tag.

And now AMT have done the 007 Ford interceptor. Was there even one of these on a 007 Movie ?

It doesn't bother me except for the Dodge Monaco, I just wondered what this sudden influx of movie related cars are about. Do the model companies get paid to advertise?

I think with the hobby in decline, the model car kit manufacturers are "grasping at straws", like so many other businesses are, to keep the cash flowing in.

Also, so much of our culture is changing, and the economy is in such an unstable place right now, that businesses are trying to just find what works for better sales.

Was down at the local Hobby Lobby yesterday and saw an AMT Coke VW, yea pretty much of a stretch.

I build models because I can't afford the real thing!

Apparently, you have not seen "Diamonds Are Forever."  Ford was a supplier to that movie.

Just the companies trying to maximize their profits on the molds that they already have in their possession.

Nothing new really.

They've been doing this sort of thing for decades.

Really nothing nefarious about it in my opinion.

As Michael Corleone would say, "it's nothing personal, it's just business". Smile

If anyone is interested … MPC currently has available a 1/25th-scale, 1978 Dodge Monaco, 4-door sedan “California Highway Patrol” Police Car with accessories kit.

Yes, I'm sure you're right. TJ Hooker 78 Monaco and Joker goon car for example.

I suppose I've noticed it more with the diecast scene. They'll release some Police car that appeared for about 3 minutes in smokey and the bandit for example.

car that appeared for about 3 minutes

but it WAS in the movie, right?

The Joker Goon cars weren't a Monaco, so it wasn't even IN the movie they've licensed it for. (although i am happy they've kept the Monaco police car on the rotation)

Just my two cents but if the kit makers want to see a rise in sales how about some NEW kits, not just rehashes of old kits. I'm tired of seeing the same old Cameron's,mustangs,gtx's..... how about the 72 ford Gran Torino Sport Coupe Fastback from "Gran Torino" and "The Fast and The Furious" and I'm not talking about rereleasing the Johan snap kit but a full detail model.

would also like to see one more offbeat models like a PLASTIC model kit of the "LandMaster" from the movie "Damnation Alley". Maybe some more 4 door kits and classics that have never been made.

just my thoughts,thanks.

don;t throw that away,i can use it!

Exactly, or as Madmax is popular again, why not revell make a 59 Bel air with their existing tooling,  with the option to build as stock.

But yes, they do seem to play it safe with what already sells. Occasionally they'll branch out with something different.
Even if they're not interested in doing old 4 door cars or 70's/80's cars because they think they're un appealing (even though half the car community in europe love old 70's yank cars), theres plenty of appealing muscle cars that'd sell such early 70's rivieras, or 69 Buick GSX for example. I'd even like to see a 71 Skylark.

To build on a point previously made, "branding" can help to increase sales of any item.  There are people who have no interest in model cars who will buy one if it has the logo from something they do collect.  I know there are people who will buy anything with the Coca Cola logo on it because they collect Coke memorabilia.

I agree that sometimes it is a stretch, but if I can get a kit I wanted to be reissued, I am glad to ignore the tie in and build it the way I want.

My other point is that by serving this market, I am sure the model companies hope to make enough money to be able to tool up new kits, as I am sure it is not cheap to pay the licensing fees from the 1:1 car companies to use thier products image, not to mention the actual process of creating the molds.

I have a list of kits I would like to see made that were never made before, and i am sure some of them would be widely desired, but then  I also want to see a 74 Mercury Comet with a straight 6 in kit form so i could build a replica of my first car.  I am sure I am in a very small club in even caring about that one!

I will get down from the soapbox now, I have to go yell at the local kids to get off my lawn! LOL
