Scale Auto Magazine Bullitt Issue
Posted by mrmike on Tuesday, November 06, 2018 3:43 PM

A great, great issue!  I've reread the Bullitt articles several times and I think they are great!  The original Bullitt Mustang article by Marcos Cruz showed an accurate '68 Mustang that I remember from the movie.  I have the Revell Bullitt '68 Mustang kit #85-4233 and I have been influenced to build it sooner than later.

The article by Bob Downie on the 2019 Bullitt Mustang made from a snap kit reminded me when the snapper first came out and Bob had won one at a show.  His version influenced me (and I was challenged to build one as well) to build a "what-if" Spenser For Hire Mustang had the show been on TV today.

Great models and great articles from a great model car magazine!

Thank you Scale Auto!

Glad you enjoyed it Mike! Was a fun project, and Marcos hit his right out of the ballpark! Since I built mine (during the summer), Splash Paints now carries the 2019 Dark Highland Green paint; I used their 2008 color on mine. I recently saw my first Bullitt on the street, such a cool car.

Back in the Day ;

 Did you know this die hard old car guy actually was drooling , uncontrolably afte seeing Bullitt ! I went right down to my Ford dealer ( drool wiped up , of course ) and Immediately purchased a green one like the Movie ( well , close anyway ) and drove home and showed it to my neighbor with a smirk on my face .

 Have always thought for once Ford got a Sport fastback right and shot it right out of the park , Talk about a financial Home Run !

I too enjoyed the magazine and thought the articles were excellent. The only complaint I have is that somehow a letter was published that was written by an alleged model builder complaining about Don and Carol Holthaus retiring. The writer lamented the fact that they decided to "up and close the business without even trying to sell it to someone else who could carry on the business". What a business owner decides to do is their right and I don't think publishing that letter does any good for our hobby. Don and Carol were a huge part of this hobby for over 30 years and enabled many of us to build models and restore models through their huge catalog of parts and kits. The fact that they announced their retirement ahead of time, took in orders that took nearly two years to fulfill and then, for one last time, held a sale on their remaining inventory says a lot about them and the type of people they are. Can't imagine many businesses doing that and not sure if I recall any that have! And in case Francis didn't notice, their son Chris has continued casting the tires they were famous for and has a website up and running.for those that want to buy them. Don and Carol could have easily closed up shop with no warning, especially years ago when they lost a son suddenly and tragically, but they didn't. To bash them for retiring is classless and I can't believe the letter was allowed to be published.

Well said MIKEMODELER regarding your comments about that letter re:-Modelhaus. I said much the same in an email to the editor - I shall be keen to see if that one is published. I know that from emails that I had from Carol that the loss of their son hit them hard. I never met them, but, from my own similar bitter experience, I can understand what motivated them to retire.

Have you got a URL for Chris's tire web-site?

As for the magazine, as ever - great. Nice to see a couple of showroom stock builds.

DRAGONSTAR :

  It's not a name anyone here is familiar with . My business , Well the Bulk of it was destroyed after a Tornado and the loss of my Son that day . For personal reasons my wife kept it running till there was nothing left to do but close .

 She paid employees from that day for two years finding them make - work to make sure they and their families were okay . Some of them had been affected too .

 Any time a company  , like Modelhaus , goes Bye-Bye Like they did , With Warning and plenty of time to see your order filled they deserve Thanks and a Well Done . Not a tirade about closing . Plus they were in it a long time .

  I cannot see anyone being peeved because someone decides it's time to retire !

For those of you who missed out on ordering from The Modelhaus, they are open again and apparently still have some inventory to get rid of. I just ordered some stuff. Same website as before!
