Cogitating ---75 Years this week ;

Hi ;

 As I said on F.S.M. I have been doing a lot of thinking about how I got started in the model anything Hobby . Did you know that 62 years ago the only car model kits you could find were ALL wood ? Yup !

 The first I remember is a 1948 Chrysler Town and Country convertible . By the same guys that did solid wood airplane kits . Well , You got a box of wood  , Some diagrams and simple instructions .

 The glue was powdered casien that you added water and glued the wood blocks together . Then you shaped it  ,Sanding till you got tired . Then you painted it . Sanded again . Then painted again till you got a finely glossy finish ( You Hoped )

 Add the wheels and tyres . The wheels and tyres were some , kind of hard black stained wood with the tyre tread and sidewalls already done .You Tapped the hub caps on with a hammer . Full wheel covers they were . Painted your whitewalls and Viola ! a model Car !

 Yeah , Hard to believe . But It doesn't stop there . Hey ! a plastic car model ! By Palmer . A Buick Dream car . The Jet Nosed Le sabre ! Ugh .Worst molding I've ever seen . But at that age it was beautiful !

 Then Revell . You remember their first cars ? Gorgeous , If you could keep from constructing Glue Bombs ! 56 Mercury , 56 Ford convertible , 57 caddy and 57 Chrysler .But the treat . A 1957 FORD Country Squire in 1/25 ! No window glass on any of these , But they whet the appetite for more .

 They even had a line of small trucks and some H.O. cars at one time . Aha . Enter A.M.T. - Remember their first 3 in 1 customizing kits ? Kit form Promos ( No Engines or underhood items ) . Tap the wheels on the axles and slide into  the painted chassis Before you screwed it to the body .

 Then Johan . Oh My ! Ambulances , Hearses and Chryslers out the wazoo ! Plus ! Chrysler's famous turbine car an a whole host of awesome classic cars . Then a Cousin , M.P.C. !  Look at the address ! Right next door to A.M.T. ! Now we were getting Buicks , Fords , Chevies , Oldsmobiles .

 Oh Boy Engines in the 3 in 1 kits wow !

 Jump forward Ten years . First Parts packs . First REVELL then A.M.T. Build to your heart's content . Ever hear of Tamiya and Hasegawa ? First imports , and Oh My ! did they raise the bar ! Many curbsides , but beautifully molded .

 Can you say race cars in 1/12  ,1/20 and 1/25 scale . Details out the window . Five more years , Photo Etch Ship and Plane parts . This carries over into Model cars . Engine parts . Turned wheels and aluminum detail parts .

Flocking in stock colors . More colors of finish paint than you can shake a stick at . Gosh , I love these little models . What's next ? Guess I will wait till 80 to check it out .

Ah ;

 Little Rock ! My stomping ground for many a year ! Used to shop at jack's Hobby Shop in Jacksonville when it was still Jack's ! Started the Central Arkansas Modelers Society ( C.A.M.S. ) when I was there . Well , Myself and a friend .

 Had my offices close to the Convention Center , In the old Cromwell , Levy , Trumper and Gatchell Building . Across from the old County Court House !

 Lived in Alexander Ar. Across the county line . Pulaski was wet , Saline county was dry . The Liquor store there made a killing ! Had two barn like storage buildings full of models .

 Thank You for the B'Day wishes !
