Where is everybody?

Wow, is this website dying a slow death or what? Something is wrong here when some of these posts were 2 months ago. I guess people are losing interest in modeling.  Oh well! I was hoping that isnt the case. Then I see some of the manufacturer's teasing us with possible releases and then back out on us. I guess this place could be a measure of the heartbeat of our hobby.

Seems like a lot of members on this forum in the past have been staying away for quite awhile now for some reason or other. I see other model car websites moving along pretty good on a daily basis. I really don't know why the lack of interest on this forum as a few years ago it was pretty busy on this site???

I was fully expecting the action around here to pick up, given the current covid-19 situation. Many are staying home and I really thought that would up the interest in the forum but it doesn't seem to be the case. It's very discouraging.

The reason I don't post here much is because there are several who think its "their" forum and run off any new poster. The "other" forums seem to be doing pretty good, they have regular moderaters that keep the peace, this place is lawless. Plus the ones who do post here are posted on just about every other forum, so there is no need to read about someones build here when its on five other forums,,,These are my opinions and I stick to themSurprise

I don't start new threads because I can't post pics.  I refuse to have my pics held hostage by some website that will charge me later to retrieve them.   Like this thread, I will respond to, but thats about all I do.

Most of my money goes for bow-ties, bikes and babes.  The rest I just waste.

I usually build model airplanes, so I usually post at FSM. I am currently working on an F-1 model, so I decided to post on this website which specializes in cars only. It is slow going on building the car because I have to clean up our planting beds. We have about 4,000 s.f. of planting beds. It takes a lot of time to clean those up. The total area of our planting beds is greater than the area of a typical City of Chicago residential lot.

Yes, this web site seems to be slow. It also seems that there are a handful of members that do most of the posting. However, FSM is not that much different.

It's just a vicious cycle in my opinion.

At least it is for me.

The less traffic that I see on the board, the less frequently I visit it.

If most people are doing the same thing, as I suspect, the traffic just continues to dwindle.

I guess most people are staring at something stupid on Facebook.  I call them  Faceboogers.  Oh well, Can't fix stupid.  I noticed that SAE hadnt had anything to say on SAE announcements either.  Say goodnight.

I can only speak for myself . Since the change from SAE and SA this has been a dissapointment for me . I've been shut off close to 8 Times without any cause , notification or explanation . I was Banned once as I used a Term from my life was found not acceptable . I apologized . When I returned , the Negativity directed against me remained . My remark dissappeared ? IMHO that looked so silly . My user name got changed every time . I was able to restore it until the latest recent event  . Now I will never again be Dimaxion I've been sice 2007 . I was told it cannot be changed to what I ask for and was ? Moderators ? What are those ? When I call out anyone for breaking Forun Rules . I am slammed so much I am embarresed and wonder why rules Exist . I too am not able to post Pics . Nor the Usery requiored to pay the Bribe to share MY Pictures . I don't have the "Dough - Ray - Me" .  When I dare complain about it I get slammed as I am not normal ?? Is this now an Exclusive Place for the Wealthy ? Where is the rule about personal attacks applied ? I was a Regular Poster in "The Past Days" . Another factor for me is , my Health has not been well enough . I choose not to be abused visiting here . As I write this I think I may be banned again . If so and I dissappear so will my Subscription since 1985 and my membership here since 2007 concurrently. Thanx for providing a place and chance to express my Opinion . I do stand corrected . I do apologize when I am proven wrong . I stand on myrecord in my Posts and what they contain .  Maybe Later .. Thanx

I spend a lot of time now on Facebook. There are a lot of model specific pages but very hard to search. I'm not posting much on this forum because of the photo hosting issue. A lot of forums are dying down and I believe it is because of specific facebook pages.

I refuse to use Facebook because your privacy is in jeopardy and it seems no one is concerned about that anymore.  It amazes me how people just whore out their privacy with little or no concern.

I don't come here often anymore for a few reasons:

I cannot post pictures easily whereas there are other places I can show my work more readily.

My computer is a pile and I cannot afford to replace it right now.  I try to go on with my phone, but I am not impressed with how the site comes across on it.

I also find that there is way to much negativity on here.  For example, there are two replies prior to mine in this thread that slam people for using Facebook, one of which reverts to name calling .  My time is limited and therefore too precious to waste on juvenile behavior.  For example, couple years ago, I was insulted by a member because I asked if anyone had a hood for my project because mine had been cut to clear a blower and I was trying to replicate a specific vehicle from my life.  Instead of moving past, this person inferred I was a bad modeler because he would have just put a scoop over the hole and moved on. I had clearly stated that I needed the stock hood becasue the truck had a stock hood.

I prefer to spend more time at the bench and less on the forum becasue I cannot build and be on here at the same time.

I disappeared years ago for 2 reasons. Crap was hitting the fan here and I stopped building models. Now that I'm setting up my hobby desk again and dusting off my stash of kits I figured I pay this site a visit again to see if it improved. A lot less post but not as negative, at least what I've seen so far. Maybe I'll pop in once and awhile. I won't be modeling any time soon as I have a lot on my plate right now, but soon I hope!

Besides the car modeling hobby I got interested back in the 60's I started with tropical freshwater fish. I still after all these years keep tanks and breed some fish. I also do wood working in my basement shop and still work on cars and motorcycles. Being a bit handicapped and 60 yrs old it's mostly fish and hopefully models again (easier on the bad back and shoulder).

Anyways, point I was leading too...

Years ago forums were the place to be. I was slow to get involved with Facebook as I've been involved in a few online places that preceeded FB but were similar. I originally joined FB just to stay in contact with my son and daughter. I finally caved and joined two fish groups, BIG MISTAKE! Whenever I tried helping someone with their problems, someone that was only in the hobby for 2 years told me I didn't know what I was talking about and would rag me. Sure ok, I've been in the hobby since the 60's but I have no clue. Screw F'n places like that, I don't have the time to jerk around.

Hey Jhande,

I also keep tropical fish and have been since about 1979. I started using potting soil under the gravel and it stabilizes the tank and makes it very easy to grow live plants and I haven't had a fish  disease since. They all die from natural causes or from fighting. Lol. Ive been building models since I was 8 or 9. Im 60 now. Took about 20 yrs off to chase girls. Lol. Now back to building models again. Glad to see you here.

I check in daily, of course you probably don't recognize me with my face mask and rubber gloves.  Quite often it doesn't take me long to look through the site.  When I see posts that are three, four months or longer I just skip them and continue on.  However I still respond to new posts when they appeal to me.

I build models because I can't afford the real thing!

I think you are not looking at those who are still here and continue to post...like me!  A few things have happened on this site for the last couple of years and some people have been affected by this.  Some can no longer log in, some have moved on to other things in life and some have lost interest in this site all together.  Instead of crying about where everyone has gone, how about pointing people in this direction and increasing viewers and membership.  Besides, not everything posted here is everyone's cup of tea.

I don't post as much as I used to for a couple of reasons.

1. I build slower. In the past I used to just build and post.
(Now heres the positive thing) This website has inspired me with some incredible builders, so I slowed down my building, and started upping my game in terms of build quality.

2. A lot of WIP threads .Sorry I just don't find them interesting, but thats just me. I'd much rather just see the end result, or if a restoration, the before and after.

3.  I've found people on here a pretty sensitive and if you make a post with an opinion, you get lynched. I find a lot of people on here don't realise theres a bigger wider world out there, further than their own.

4. A lot of my closest friends I made on here have left, and have joined facebook. Old time members like Slabbedask, and MkowaPHD . Even though I'm not on any model forums on facebook, I talk to them on a personal note on there. Slabbedask even came to visit me from Norway once.

5. I think a lot of people left because a certain admin used to really piss people off. He used to hand out bannings like toilet rolls during Corona virus.
I got banned twice for having an opinion.

6. I think lastly, like anything, when some of us started on SA, the concept was fairly new. I mean when I started, I used to take photos of my models with a digicamera and stick the card in the computer, instead of an Ipad which downloads straight to a photosharing site.  Now the modelcar forum has been done to death, and also facebook has appeared.

POSITIVE NOTE... I'll remain on here, because if it wasn't for this forum, I wouldn't have met people like Slabbedask. I've another friend in the UK, who I meet up with now again who I met here.

Haha, JH are actually my initials.
Yes he did. I know a few members who stopped coming on here because of him.
I'm not sure if it was down to him, but it used to make me laugh when normal words would be censored because they contained a curse word. Like Grass . It would come out as Gr$&*, because of the 'ass' part of it. Not sure if that was down to him or the software.

I am here every day, but don't always post every day. I'm sure there are others like that as well. I've seen some here that take a general comment made about a situation and accuse others of directing things at them. I'm sure some don't post because of stuff like that, but I for me like I said I'm here daily, but don't post if I've nothing to say. I'm on about 8 or so forums. I'd say about half of them are small forums or don't have huge amounts of traffic. That's ok.

OK, so now we have heard the negitive side, what would it take to get this forum up to what everyone thinks it should be? I think the first thing would be for visitors who come here to start posting not just looking, hell even if it just a "howdy do, nice work" type post. Forums like this are about "conversation", so make some conservations...

There has actually been a fairly steady run of new members trickling in over the last year or so, but many soon stop posting or don't participate.

I think the photo hosting requirements for this forum is largely to blame. People get frustrated trying to share their work, then go elsewhere where it is easier. The path of least resistance. Until photo hosting improves, this site will continue to suffer.

As a side note, anyone noticed the numbers of post views lately? The numbers are huge. There may not be many participants, but there sure are a lot of lookers.

I would think they've gone on to better sites with less issues.

My favorite color is clear. I am also ambidexterous, I can screw up equally well with either hand. I am 53 years old and been building for most of that time. :)
